Beware Qatar [COVID-19] refund policy

Quick update, got the refund after I left a potential chargeback message on the request portal. Ticket is still open though and no email communication since. Exchange rate movements burnt me, lost $500 :(

Ouch! That's unlucky. The A$ had plunged against the QRial since late March - A$0.40 per rial now Vs A$0.48 in late March, but between June 2019 and early March 2020, it only varied between 0.39 and 0.42. Of course your card and/or QR mightn't use spot :(

BTW, if you paid in Rials by a card that charges a separate FX fee, did that get reversed? I got mine back.

So just to clarify, you went to the online form for refund requests (?) quoted your claim/request number (?) and threatened a charge back unless they processed the refund asap (?) and that worked??
😯

Got the FX fee reversed as well.

I used the same refund request ticket from before, and added a comment regarding a potential chargeback as I had not heard anything for 7 weeks. Got the refund overnight after that.

So today marks the 70 day mark (50 business days) since my refund request. I am not sure how that compares with Qatar's KPIs - nobody from Qatar has to date been able to properly clarify what their standard refund period is.

i tried one last time to phone Qatar today - not surprisingly all I got was the call centre in India, and a promise to 'leave a note' on my file to request a refund. I felt that the customer service agent was genuinely sympathetic, but clearly Qatar is kicking and dragging its heels to avoid any refunds whatsoever.

I noted the advice from others on this thread to 'threaten' a charge back in writing - I have done so, but that had no effect. So today I had to initiate a chargeback with Qantas Premier mastercard. They gave me a case number, but said that the investigations can take up to 6 to 8 weeks at the moment. I'm just happy they agreed to commence a charge back process .

i appreciate that these are very difficult times for airlines, and Qatar is not alone in this situation (it sounds like Qantas is no saint in relation to refunds). However it baffles me how some people could have experienced A+ customer service with Qatar... my experience has been so far removed from that. There was a period where I would try calling them 20 times a day and every time I would be cut off before I could even get on hold. Maybe they treat Qatar FF customers better? Not sure. I will definitely think twice about paying the extra premium to fly Emirates next time.

I hope others are faring better with their refund requests.

BA flight from UK to Aus (sept) was cancelled week ago and cash+points were refunded (to Amex) days later. I suppose lots of airlines are in a dire straight but with current crises customer care should be number one if they want customers back.
