hi there,

3 mates and myself are driving Big Sur on the 9th and 10th of April. we are driving from San Diego to San Fran and will need to stop on the road (Big Sur) for the Saturday night.

This is our first go on this road, so we are wondering where is suitable to stop. We had planned on making it about half way along on the Saturday then pulling in.

I am inclined to book as we go, but we have some information that accommodation on that road is always in demand, so pre booked is best.

Just chasing ideas and suggestions.

Once more, thanks in advance.

Cheers
BJ

The first half of the drive from the South is not really the Big Sur which runs from San Simeon to Carmel. I did the reverse last year (SF to LA) and made 2 stops at Monterey and Pismo Beach. Make sure you take in Hearst Castle on the way.

We've stopped the same 2 places a few times when doing the drive (Pismo + Monterey).

Monterey is pretty close to San Fran - Pismo Beach would be a better midpoint to stop, if only stopping once.
Plenty of awesome 'cliff-top' accommodation looking right out to sea, good spot to enjoy a couple of evening beers on your balcony

I rode the Big Sur on a motorbike many years ago.
IIRC the first o/night was San Luis Obispo.
Carmel was certainly a nice town for lunch. Didn't see Clint though.

We've stopped at Monterey, San Simeon and Morro Bay on a couple of separate trips along the route. Morro Bay was lovely and is closer to half way for your trip. You;re probably already aware that the actual Big Sur section of Highway 1 between San Simeon and Monterey is likely to have a lot of traffic on the Saturday/Sunday and will be a bit slow. It's a lovely drive though with lots of great photography spots on the way. I think you're wise to book accommodation at the weekend , we saw lots of No Vacancy signs on the drive.
Hope you have a great trip
