Yep that's correct. 4 day "stopover" in RGN. The flight out of Sydney is the lovely 10pm departure so there's a 9 hour transit in BKK, but I'll just go to a hotel. There's also an overnight in BKK on return for the 7am BKK-SYD.

I got onto United via Facebook and they were quick to provide the TG number. Surprisingly efficient!

This was basically just a last minute decision for a quick week getaway after the Xmas break. Haven't been to either Burma or Laos before so it was a good excuse.

For those interested, availability is fairly good. Unfortunately the connection times to LPQ didn't work so that's why we've ended up in VTE.

Can I ask what you used to find availability? United, ANA Or Aeroplan?

Just did it on the United website. Easiest award booking I've ever done. I almost booked it as SYD-RGN and then VTE-SYD. Only after a quick forum did i realize we could have the connection for free. Saved $500 and a few hours of lounge-less economy

Looks like this is back again. +80% till Nov 20 for me anyway.

Just received an email for 45% off which I think is actually the best I've seen? Shame I'm so close to my annual limit :( Only valid until 14 Dec

Got the email for 45% off too. Too bad I've pretty much reached my limit for the year.

Hmm I've just checked and it seems I can buy another 70k. Must have used my partners account for most of the UA this year. Why must they tempt me! 45% off is very good though, isn't it?

= 82% bonus

Watch the layover time and red eye connections. Most flights to Asia are TG from SYD. Still a good deal!

A good deal for sure. However, there are also numerous flights to Asia on other carriers, including SQ, NH, OZ and NZ (via AKL). Not just SYD either.

To be pedantic, I've never actually seen an available Business class award seat on Air NZ. But yes, the other carriers (and flights from places other than Sydney) are all realistic options.

They're still available from time to time on flights from AKL to PVG on the 789. I plan to take one in Oct/Nov, but they can be a bit hard to find.

Now that I'm starting to understand the program that's a very good deal.

Keeping an eye out for next promotion.

I got a +75% offer by email yesterday. Works out at 149k miles at $3200 USD so clearly not as good as above.

I got an email from them this morning - 40% off mile purchases of over 50,000 miles. (That's effectively the same as an 80% bonus). Quite a good deal but not sure if it's targeted.

If you're ready for your next trip, get there sooner by buying the award miles you need with this special offer. Use your award miles on flights, upgrades, merchandise and more.
