Bonza Airline Discussion

Tried out Bonza today, so I thought I’d compile some thoughts on the experience.

It was a pretty full flight. A couple of vacant seats here and there. Most people seemed to be fare paying passengers, and a lot were Sunshine Coast locals who were excited to try the new airline in their backyard. They were taking photos, they knew all the names of the planes, there was definitely a buzz around Bonza.

It’s early days and it was clear they have some things to iron out. Boarding commenced only to have everybody stand on the tarmac for 15 minutes because the crew weren’t ready. They also had trouble scanning the boarding passes on the app, so they had to print hard copies for a lot of people. I had already asked for one at check-in and they happily obliged (see Qantas, it’s not that hard). I also found it odd they only used the front door for in both Maroochydore and Avalon. The flight eventually departed 40 minutes late.

Prior to boarding, they announced the flight had limited catering and people should stock up on items from the airport. The cabin crew explained they didn’t have time to re-cater the aircraft during the turn around without delaying the flight further. They still had a decent selection of snacks and drinks available at reasonable prices. I purchased an Anzac biscuit and lemonade for $5.85. The onboard ordering system worked very well. My items were brought to my seat within a few minutes. All Bonza staff, ground and cabin crew, were fantastic. You could see how genuinely proud they were of the Bonza brand.

The 737 MAX is a quiet aircraft. “Sheila” still had the LOT Polish Airlines insignia on the bulkhead near the entryway, larger overhead bins, and USB ports and universal outlets at all seats. My only gripe was the padding wasn’t that great. I did have a bit of a sore behind by the time we reached Avalon.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised. I would have no hesitations flying Bonza again. For a low cost carrier I think they have a great product, and if I had to choose between Bonza and Jetstar, I’d go straight to Bonza.

People who would otherwise drive to Melbourne I guess who don’t want to pay 2-3x on Qantas or Rex. Lots of people travel to Melbourne from Mildura for all sorts of things (sport, concerts, VFR, medical treatment, etc ). The route timings on this one are interesting Fri, Mon, Wed. I expect they’ll have no prnoblem selling the Friday evening flights. I guess it allows for long weekends in both directions.

This is really revival of a VA service that used to be an ERJ service but upgauged to 737 multiple weekly when they got rid of the regional jets.

I’d say it is one of their more sensible routes and likely to stay long term (and indeed could benefit from QF and ZL being on the route to offer people alternatives if timing doesn’t suit - AB+ZL will still be cheaper than 2xZL flights).

You're omitting that V/Line operates three road coaches daily return to Swan Hill (typically connecting with a train to Kerang, Bendigo and Melbourne Southern Cross) and these are often full. There's an alternative (overnight) coach Melbourne via Donald to Mildura but usually this is not fully booked.

I have seen additional passengers presenting at Swan Hill unable to travel to Mildura because they didn't prebook. Quite a few international backpackers use the train plus coach, sometimes en route to Robinvale to pick fruit.

From the end of March 2023 in a $303 million costly state government policy, V/Line adult fares will drop to a flat fare of $9.20 for a daily ticket. (Not sure if a single fare will be $4.60 maximum for an adult, I suspect not).

A huge further subsidy when the state is already mired in more debt per capita than any other in Australia. Seat booking on the coaches is compulsory. Historically long distance trains have been compulsory seat booked for the sole first class car, but in economy, there's always one unreserved car.

Obviously takes longer than a Bonza or other airline flight plus SkyBus/taxi/route 901 SmartBus Melb Airport-CBD but becomes far cheaper than driving (and air travel plus travelling to/from Melbourne CBD) so it may see V/Line further increase passenger numbers.

I also found it odd they only used the front door for in both Maroochydore and Avalon. The flight eventually departed 40 minutes late.

Would this require additional staff to move the stairs from the apron to the rear door?

It may be Bonza endeavouring to cut costs, but surely a few minutes' greater delay costs more in other ways: missing slots if applicable, extra fuel if a holding pattern results, compounding delays and perhaps extra salaries/wages to on board staff?

They are these new Recaro seats, the same seat seen on the new Jetstar NEO (minus the headrest). They are not that great.

Thanks for your post. Very interesting

Unfortunately the seats are very thin on padding. Its the airline's way of cramming more seats into the aircraft/or increasing legroom

I wonder - do they sell the cup? or are they a keep cup

Suggest: instead of using "attach files" to upload photos, use the icon at the top of the window when you type a post which looks like picture "insert image" . That way the pictures are not just attached but inserted. You can also insert a thumbnail or full.

It’s what they give you with your drink instead of a disposable plastic cup. It does say “please return, this cup is reusable” on it but it may have ended up in my bag….The only branded items for purchase were the budgie smugglers. I don’t think there were any takers….

How Aussie is it to drink out a cup - especially with a long neck bottle. Would have thought straight from bottle is more cultural?:)

Also what is in "Snag in a Bag". It is a sausage sandwich or a hotdog?

I wrote to QF one time to tell them they should do a sausage sandwich (Bunnings style). But I never got a reply back.

The cup probably only a few cents less than airfare.
Thanks for the trip report
I plan to dip my toe in w Bonza im Vic winter

Would be good if VA served hot food for sale. AB and JQ do now.
I believe the 'Toasties' are VA's only hot options in LCC Y atm.

Though overall I agree. VA could also join their LCC/'Value Orientated' counterparts in JQ, TR, D7 and Batik Group (Indonesia and Malaysia) in offering pre-booked hot meals on their Short Haul International flights.

VA's competitors in Batik Group (both Indonesia and Malaysia divisions) operate the exact same 737 aircraft as VA, only Batik has 12J at 42inch pitch.

If Batik can offer pre-booked Hot Meals on their short-haul international services in Y with the exact same aircraft as VA (and almost the same cabin configuration), then so can VA for the their short haul international flights into Fiji, Bali and Queenstown.

Getting off topic but VA doesn’t offer meals in any form on its short haul international ops? Bizarre.
International is getting way OT but even Dom, they used to have hot options for purchase during the DJ days.

Looks like a pretty quiet day tomorrow. The morning MCY-TSV has a few dozen seats blocked, and the ROK-TSV will probably go out empty.

TSV-ROK would seem like it’s a fizzer. I think Virgin tried some sort of FNQ regional route map way back in the day, was E170s I think. Pretty sure I flew that route or something similar was only $49. They pulled that plan a little while after and rerouted me via cities.
EDIT: found it.

From what I recall the intra Qld routes on VB got pulled after JB / Hogan / SQ / EY / NZ consortium took over and started the VB to VA 1.0 transition.

The E170s were flogged off to an affiliate of then VA partner DL.
