Book the Cook

Do they give you an alcohol list that you just select from and do you select from them whenever you feel like it or when they come around asking for drinks? I dont want to bother them if you are meant to wait during the drinks periods. Although sounds like you can order whenever you like. Is that the same for champagne?

Food looks like it is a tricky one, i can see it changing alot depending on various circumstances.

There will be a menu n drinks list in yr seat when u board., so check it out while you have that first glass of champagne or mineral water, or juice or whatever on the ground.

A good crew will be organised to tell you , before takeoff, when lunch/dinnner is to be served and they shud also at that time take yr order for another drink to be served after reaching cruise.

Normally menus choices are taken when they bring round that first airborne drink but may depend how CSM wants to run the show, you cud be asked to decide before takeoff..

:cool:That's what the call button is for. (although probably not while they are doing service but any time in between) The drinks menu will be with the food menu.

Is there an etiquette to follow when to order drinks and how to order or is it expected to use call button and order drinks at any time besides like mentioned earlier during periods where they are performing specific activities like service / food orders and safety messages etc.

I noticed also there are certain dishes that state Exclusively designed by international culinary panel chef. Are they generally better?

Not necessarily. Depends on your tastes and also how the crew manages the dishes on board.

That is where my indecision is coming out. Cant decide between what i think i should order (what is more special or rare to get on a flight in economy and also what would be their specialty or better done as opposed to what may generally appeal to me more).

Is there any point doing a web checkin if you fly J or F? I guess you probably can just walk right up and check in anyway as there isnt a separate web check in for J or F lines.

Always check-in online before heading to airport for ALL classes - drink as much as whatever you can squeeze in - order from Crew when they approach - when they pass by you - or just push the call button - that is what it is there for.

Check IFM a week or 2 before flying - it is all documented there for you - you can also see complete list BTC available from the port you are departing from - it's up to you

DO NOT think anything listed as 'exclusively designed by World Renowned Chef' is going to get you any better than any standard meal - most of these dudes are out and out flogs and nothing more

Now if any of them ran a Michelin starred restaurant in a pressurised tube, 35000+ feet above sea level (and didn't sport a ponytail??) , it might well be worth considering. Meantime, I think the real experts are in- house (either in the airlines or catering firms). They exclusively do catering for 35,000 feet, and not for a restaurant on the ground.

Do you mind if I ask why? I usually check in online domestic but never international. Is it just to reduce the risks of being offloaded on a full flight? Or is there another reason. Thanks

I have never ever had a prob with SQ with 100s of flts without online check-in early - then stories started popping up re QF in particular about peeps arriving at airport to be booted off to lower class or off altogether - ain’t worth the risk with any airline IMO

Thanks. That's a good enough reason for me to start doing the same.

One stupid question on this point, can you get a proper boarding pass when you check your bags in, or are you stuck to an online Boarding Pass?

If you do a web checkin, are you still able to change food and seat options after that?

Food options can be changed up to 24 hrs before departure. I am not sure if they can be changed after webcheckin, but you can uncheck online if you want to make changes to seating or meal selection. Easy way to deal with this is not do OLCI until you leave for the airport!

Of course, in fact I've never used an online BP with SQ, in hundreds of flights. It's possible (depending on where you are travelling to), you will need to front up for a document check even with OLCI. And if you're departing from Changi, much easier to have printed BP, as you will need to present to at least 4-5 people. I find travelling internationally mobile BP's are more of an inconvenience than a convenience.

Ok so I know I am weird and stupid - but I hate electronic BPs - I always get hard copies.

I also hate non colour coded physical BPs a la MEL - gotta have colour - when you check-in online you can print coloured ones which really aren’t exactly like real ones but at least you can get a coloured copy if you want - leave it home and get a real white one at dep.

I always keep BP stubs / train tix stubs etc as kinda souvenir of trip - told you I was weird

Review meals to be consumed en route prior to online check-in - esp premium cabins - maximising flying exp requires due diligence - leave no stone unturned! 👍

Glad it's not just me then! Mrs Phoenix has come around to having souvenirs such as BPs for significant trips. Also, to slightly diverge this thread from J to F, if you're on a midnight departure would you automatically suggest Book the Cook instead of the reduced service due to departure time?
