I'll give a few locals tips for tourist ideas, using knowlege I have gained over the years.
  • The sky tower is great if you haven't been to auckland before, as you can seefor miles on a clear day, but instead of paying for a ticket, go and eat lunch in orbit. Last year they ran an extended special, and they may run it again this year, where it was $25 for a2 course lunch. The food isn't hugely substantial, but I reccomend the salt and pepper squid, and it costs you the same price as entry to the sky tower. you can also go for dinner, but I think lunch is better value, but it depends on what you want to see, and how your timing works
  • If you like pizza, there is a really good pizza place on queen street, opposite the IMAX, known by a few names, including pizza pizza, the kiwi music bar, and a few others. It's located upstairs, in a historic building, so the stairs are very steep, but if you are lucky, you can get a table by the window and look out over queen street. It's not a fancy place, but it is very cheep for a bar. If you like fancier pizza, my personal favourite is Portofino in the viaduct, but you can't really compare the two.
  • The matakana farmers market is cool, running on saturdays from 8-1, it's a bit of a drive, so you'd need a car, but if you do go, also stop at the matakana cinemas to see a movie. they are my favorite cinemas in the country, due to the fact that they are themed inside.
  • If you want to go shopping, new market is nice, but if youwant to pick up a bargain, then you want to head out to dressmart at onehunga. Albany is probably the best shopping mall if you don't mind driving, some people like sylvia park, personally I'm not a huge fan.
  • there is a cool strawberry farm out by the airport, which will be on your left as you are driving on the main road out to manukau, if you're heading into the city you won't pass it, but they have cheap strawberries, but als do reallygood blended strawberry icecream.
  • Another place to check out is valentino's gelato on queen street. It's not the best tasting I've ever had, but it's an experience and the range of flavours is amazing.
  • For brunch one morning, go to Zarbos in New Market. There is also a neat deli there.
  • If you have a nice evening and feel like doing something relaxed, head down to mission bay for fish and chips at the beach, possible followed by movenpick ice cream, or if you feel like a more substantial dinner, I highly reccomend the mexican restaurant in mission bay, I believe it is called dos amigos????
That's all I can think of off the top of my head... I notice most of it relates to food, but I guess that's just reflective of my interests. Hope it helps

Strawberries are getting to the end of their best, maybe still good in Matamata?

And Otara markets can be " ïnteresting" lots of PI stuff

Hi Guys,

I've been quiet on this thread since I put vote in and sent my email to BR as I have been away and didn't want to get too excited until I knew I had a couple of seats. However on my return the gods and my boss (BossReggie that is :D) have seen fit to allow me to get excited and thus my partner and I have made the cut. So not only will I get to meet my boss, but will get to meet you all as well.

Thank you very much to BossReggie for organising all of this.

Reggie

Good to have you along Reggie.

Seeing it is a special birthday.... We will see if we can make it memorable for you both!!

Hi All.

Just spoke with the team regards the weekend.

Friday night @ Jervois...... I have booked the private dining area and capped the attendees at 12. I can not increase the numbers attending the Friday dinner at all.

Hoping to have a very "special" winemaker on hand to take us through the wines.

I may be a little presumptuous not having heard a yay or nay yet for the lunch on Saturday, but after looking at airline schedules, I think I would be travelling Friday, so wonder if there was still any room available for Jervois?

I've PM'd you oz_mark.

This serves as a reminder to me as I have been busy flying around the county for drinks the past few days and have not been following this up.

If you have any intention of attending and you have not yet emailed me then please do so. It seems that some people have maybe assumed that if they voted, they were coming. This is NOT the case. I need you to contact me via email.

Please get onto it.

Next week I will email everyone a receipt along with an attachment which allows you to put your flight details and whether you require a transfer to/from the airport. There are still some spots for winery tour on Sunday however Friday dinner and Monday lunch are both fully booked.

I've saved a few places at the Saturday lunch for people who have expressed interest and who I know, but should they not be utilised, there may be space for some latecomers. Priority will be given to those who voted.

Anyhow....... It's shaping up to be a big weekend. I'm looking forward to it myself!

Boss

.......mmmm, 5 texts from GPH at Wed drinks...'"you should come". Now I really wish I hadn't blown the Budget on something else. How would I cope with him flying up the front and me squashed down the back. Stuck in Auckland all next week wishing I could change the dates (to April) on my non refundable Business Seats. However, the Cairns lunch sounds awfully good (......tax deductible).

Wa good to see bossreggie at the BNE drinks and discuss this upcoming event with some hopeful participants (including bossreggie briefly). Will be nice to know firsthand the members who get the opportunity to get on the corporate jet...at least I can coddle to my breast the fact that whilst I haven't been on a corporate jet, I did make Concorde...

Now if Katie can get herself organised...

So we will need a temp club room. Local bar? Any suggestions?

Anyone heading over early?
As previously posted I am going (QF 113) via Sydney on the 26th ( mainly so I can be fresh for Friday night)
Can guest 1 to biz lounge BTW, not that I have much time on the ground. I arrive from Bne 1 hour before scheduled departure.
But will be in Bne Dom biz lounge from about 12.00 or 12.30 that day

I'm not too sure what you're trying to insinuate there, Mr. Wilson!!! ;)

Mist get my conference organiser friend, well, organised, so that the HNL dates are confirmed & we can make our travel & hotel arrangements for AKL ... And most importantly, make sure the babysitters are ready! :p
