Hi nathanas and welcome to AFF.

Like you, I am a small business owner with a foot in a couple of camps.

For frequent flyer points I now mostly use Citi Signature that does not direct sweep (you can get a QF one too). I can then transfer these points to VA or SQ. I also use ANZ Black with direct sweep to QF.
You will be surprised how quickly points accumulate. Put it this way, one year, +1 and I spent about one million points on QF domestic business class flights. Not the best use of points IMHO but I don't really have the opportunity to fly international.

Don't worry about the surcharge. I spent about $10,000.00 last year on surcharges but don't forget that it is a tax deductable expense. I just look at it as part of my wages that earns me a massive amount of points worth many, many more times that.

Another card not mentioned here which I have and might be worth your while getting is the Maquarie Hilton Card.
The card gives you instant Gold status and after a $40,000 spend you get Diamond status. I took my time spending on this card so it took me about 10 weeks to get Diamond. Look into it, it might be worth it for you. For me, the fact that I get a free night once a year pays for the card.

Another thing I would encourage you to do is come along to social events and engage with members.
In my experience members will divulge more to you once they get to know and "connect" with you.

Just to clarify mooingchicken's comments. A card like my CBA Platinum AMEX yields up to 3 CBA Awards points per $, but they transfer to QF and VA at 2 CBA:1 airline point, hence the 1.5 airline points that mc mentions. The paired Mcard is 1 CBA point per $, so 0.5 airline point.

With the CBA, you can either nominate QFF redemption up front (and pay I think $10pa) OR if you don't make a nomination, you can redeem on VA or flight centre, or other choices at any time.

is the 250k points per year related to business a potential issue? or everyone turning a blind eye to that?

I wondered the same thing, but didn't dwell on it too much. Years ago I was earning quite a number of points (Ansett :() with a Westpac personal CC and they wrote to me and changed me over to a business CC with the same point earn. I think some of the cards spoken about are business cards.

What issue are you meaning? Not a challenge; genuine question.

The CBA cards I mentioned above were business ones; the personal ones I have are 'Diamond' and earn a little more on the Mastercard. Although I don't make a habit of it, my accountant tells me that use of a personal card for business expenses is OK (I'm a one-man business) and I treat it like a Directors Loan in the accounts. It gets paid back at the end of the month (or next).

That's the way I used to do it as well. These days, my business has moved focus more to consulting so I don't have the spend that I used to and hence I don't have to worry about it.

Amex Business Accelerator does give 2 MR points/$ (=2.3 VA points during transfer bonus) but capped at 100K points when it reverts to 1MR/$.
Usual Amex exclusions (0.5/$ on ATO insurances etc) and only 1/$ on foreign

Thanks again everyone. So helpful. Got my Anz black in the mail. Am I right to apply for another card so soon? I really want to get going on the velocity points too. Thanks for the heads up on the cards buzzard. I was thinking of going the highest velocity points earning card out there? I notice a lot of people going for a card that doesn't direct earn points however?

edit. Buzzard I'm curious about the Hilton card. Is its points conversion to hotel stay worthwhile?

ATO has no problem whatsoever if business expenses charged to personal card - when paying each month just allocate all charges to corresponding expenses and personal spending to Shareholders Loan / Account or whatever you call it - pay total amount off via Business Account. Simple!

ATO have scant interest in genuine honest taxpayers - play ducks and drakes with them and they gonna get you sooner or later.

Which Black did you get the freq flyer (qantas) or the standard rewards? (im assuming the freq flyer one?)

There is only a few direct earn velocity, and when you can get non-direct earn with the points, this give you other options, for airlines etc if need be. Also allows you to wait until bonuses are offered (normally 15%) and transfer then

Yep, freq flyer. Is the Anz black rewards possibly the next best option for my second points earner?

It all depends on the category of the Hilton. In Oz you need around 60k a night IIRC but somewhere like DT in KL is around 15k a night. To me the points are a bonus, it's the free night and status that gives me the most benefit.

Ok so I'm off and earning QFF's. What's my best uncapped Velocity points card? Gotta get this second one going!

Sorry maybe I wasn't clear. I want to extend my reach and start earning velocity points on another credit card. Looking for the best points earner, uncapped.

Ah, right. I'm not sure about the uncapped bit, but I find the AMEX Platinum Edge to be a good earner (MR points) and the AMEX Velocity Platinum (VA points). I started a bit of a table as to what I know the rate they both earn at. Masters was a nice surprise and so to was ALH (a fave spot for a counter lunch) and Dans!

Thanks Swan, but noiw you're going to hate me. Should of mentioned I was looking for a Visa/MC velocity earner. Most of my suppliers don't take amex.:(
(or both Amex and VISA/MC)

I don't hate anyone! Visa/Mcard will be limited I'm afraid and I'll let others answer that. I'll be applying shortly for the NAB Velocity but that will be for the bonus points rather than the spend earn and as you likely know the Velocity highflyer/flyer has been dramatically reduced (but still earn).

Ok so in light of the velocity earn being reduced it looks like I probably shouldn't go with a direct earn velocity points card? I'm leaning towards Anz black rewards. With that and the Anz Qantas black will that give me a good spread across the board?

edit: unless I'm missing something here, I can earn two points per dollar with the Anz black visa and then trade 2 points for 1 velocity?

For a Velocity earning Visa or MasterCard credit card, the ANZ Rewards Black is about as good as it gets. Yes, you earn 2 points per $1, then can trade 2 ANZ points for 1 Velocity point. So you're effectively earning 1 VA point per dollar. The added benefit of a card like this which isn't a direct sweep card is that you have the flexibility to transfer to Cathay Pacific or Singapore Airlines instead if you wish. For premium cabin travel to Asia or Europe, that could work out to be better value for you. (You can also transfer from ANZ to Air New Zealand, but don't do that - they have a horrible program.)
