For a Velocity earning Visa or MasterCard credit card, the ANZ Rewards Black is about as good as it gets. Yes, you earn 2 points per $1, then can trade 2 ANZ points for 1 Velocity point. So you're effectively earning 1 VA point per dollar. The added benefit of a card like this which isn't a direct sweep card is that you have the flexibility to transfer to Cathay Pacific or Singapore Airlines instead if you wish. For premium cabin travel to Asia or Europe, that could work out to be better value for you. (You can also transfer from ANZ to Air New Zealand, but don't do that - they have a horrible program.)

Remembering with a transfer bonus, you might get another 15-20% on top.

Hi people....

Firstly, let me say that I don't post very often, but I read this forum frequently. There are so many knowledgeable people on here and I thank you for all the tips I've received from everyone in the past.

On this thread. My situation is this:

* I have Gold Status on Qantas
* My current balance is around 1 million points and I can rack up around 400,000 to 500,000 annually, paying every bill I can on credit card - including ATO BAS's.
* I have ANZ Black Amex and Visa
* My favoured airline is Qantas (What can I say? I'm a patriot. ;-) )
* I try to fly One World whenever I can.
* I pay for one business trip per year - Business class to Europe - that tax-deductible trip helps me retain my Gold status with QF
* I use points only for two other overseas trips per year in Business

My question: is there anything else I should be doing to maximise my benefits? (Many thanks in advance)

Always a good idea to double check terms for points applicable. Some pay more points for some purchases, less points for other items.

EG> Last I checked my QF Amex NORMALLY gives me 1.5 Qantas point per dollar spent, however for meals, be it in a good restaurant or fast food chain, it gives me 3 points per dollar spent. Flip side, is that for Phone Bills, etc, it only gives about 0.5 point for dollar spent.

So Visa card pays the phone and most other bills, and Amex is really only used for meals!

Honestly, it sounds like you have most of this pretty much worked out already! :)

My only advice if you have such a high spend is to consider some alternative programs to Qantas to send your credit cad points to. Off the top of my head I can't think of any non-QF/VA cards that still earn full points with the ATO, but you could (for example) use a card that credits to Cathay Pacific or American Airlines (even if it's via SPG) for other purchases. Depending on where you fly to each year, you might find that these airlines offer better value Qantas redemptions than Qantas Frequent Flyer itself.
