Bus, Breakfast and Booze in the Barossa [Sun 3Apr16]

I don't do any preparation beforehand and just enjoy what comes next. I do nearly always buy 1/2 or 1 case from each winery visited (note that Buzz usually manages to get the winery to do free or 'members price' freight :) (never guaranteed or expected, though).

Great question Termite. You could widen the scope to any wine tour really.

Generally when touring I love trying lots of different wines, but not to "get drunk". I honestly enjoy tasting different things and seeing which ones I like and which ones I don't like (or like less).

As with RooFlyer - Limited preparation here. If it is a winery I am unfamiliar with a quick visit to their website and maybe some reviews, but I am generally happy to form my own opinion on the day.

For any wine which I like I will generally try to buy 3+ bottles to drink over a period of time. Half Dozens, Dozens or two dozen are common quantities at Chateaux penegal. Naturally my enthusiasm is tempered by budget and other concerns, but if a wine is good I will generally buy multiples.

I always try to buy a minimum of 3 bottles of anything in my drinking "window". The window is what I'm currently drinking, red / white / bubbly, and is any wine pleasing to the taste. There are exceptions, if I believe the wine is of above average then I'll normally grab a six pack or dozen, after all they are put in boxes for a reason

What I don't do is buy single bottles, unless it is going to be consumed pretty much straight away, a good example is buying a bottle of wine at a winery to have with lunch...

For me, it is very disappointing to find a nice wine, only to buy a bottle or two, then regret later than more was not purchased, hence I always buy a minimum of three, but mostly 6 or more of anything in the "window"...

The downside is it makes a day visiting wineries and tasting days pretty expensive, but its a good investment and will pay dividends over many, many years...

What we buy can change from tour to tour. Sometimes nothing, sometimes a dozen or two. As a "local", the Barossa is less than an hour's drive away, so often if we don't buy, we can easily go back again to pick up what we want. Also, I work for a wine logistics company which exports quite a bit of the local product, so I have other avenues to getting bottles of wine I may like :-)

The wine tours for me are more a great day out than a wine purchasing day! Hubby may disagree though.

Back in SYD and just paid for me and +1 but need to confirm breakfast options when I actually get to see him :)

Me: Eggs Benedict with Bacon, Cappuccino with Skim Milk
+1: Eggs Benedict with Smoked Salmon, Flat White

We're non-starters for dinner on Sat night, I'm afraid - we're having an anniversary dinner on our lonesome :)

What about if 20 odd people promise to leave you alone? You could always sit at the end of the table

Seriously though, enjoy your anniversary dinner.
Where is it by the way as we haven't booked anything yet? :D

I booked us in to stay at the Mayfair so going to check out the Mayflower while we're there. I've heard good things!

If it wasn't our anniversary, though, I'd be straight down Gouger for my old favourite Ky Chow...

For those of you who are not Stonewall members, this tour will provide you with an opportunity to not only taste premium wine that is not usually available to the general public but to also purchase some on the day.

BUzz, would/could this be museum releases or SVS Flaxman Valley Shiraz etc ?

Any examples of what goodies the tour could access last year?

Last year we were able to taste some museum release Basket Press, Cane Cut and some fortified not usually available to the public.
I can't remember if we tasted any of the SVS wines or the Black Shiraz.

IIRC everything excluding SVS was made available for purchase but with a nod and a wink you never know what may become available.

Excellent, I best sell another child in the next few weeks :oops::lol:

Finally all sorted and paid! There was a bit of a scare with hubby changing jobs and being rostered on that weekend, but we've sorted that now!

Can we please have 1 & 3 for breakfast, with 2 Latte's.

Last year we all had to put up drinking this horrible stuff, it was that horrible that I instantly set out to find some to purchase elsewhere since they wouldn't / couldn't sell me any at Rockford's ;)

Oh, and Buzz, I still have the Golden Ticket from the very first tour (somehow was some sort of Samurai back then he he)... As you will recall, was rather a Cessna back then than, compared to the now more luxurious and roomful Dash 8

Looking forward to it...

Those boarding passes were great!
