not many media outlets will let this disaster go easily.
Not just this one but then they go on to create another one - this time with the predicted rain event. It’s bad enough without all the heightened panic.
And one radio station in an effort to boost ratings is doing a live broadcast from KI. It’s a bit late. It’s just that the two people involved will just have returned from their holidays. Priorities. Only for them.

Sounds like the CT didn't convey the full picture.

This was rain per radar for yesterday (Thursday). Some <10mm areas, but plenty of 10-25 mm also over the fire ground to the SW of Canberra and some drenchings over the fire areas to the SE. Not to say 'problem over' by any means, but like i mentioned above, not many media outlets will let this disaster go easily.

Rain since 9am today.

definitely not what they said! They quoted BOM forecaster Neale Fraser as saying it was”bad news” for the bulk of the fire grounds which stayed dry and an RFS spokesman said saying low numbers had been a dominant feature. Gospers Mountain near Newcastle got 18mm but no rain at Tumut and very little in Kosciusko.

You do have to be a little careful with the radar, as it seems to pick up smoke as moisture. If you have a look at Moruya on your map the colour would indicate close to 10mm, but in fact from the BOM site at 9am this morning it had only had 1.2 mm. It seems to have had more today which is good. Mt Ginini is another one - purple on the map, but only had 1mm by 9am this morning.

Yes, it's appears the coverage is somewhat different when the Southern states are affected. IIRC, the media packed their bags and left pretty much after the water peaked in the 2011 SEQ / 2019 FNQ floods.... you can add the cyclones to the list :p

Maybe a sign of the times.... will need to wait for another disaster north of NSW to see if the intensity will be consistent ;)

I read in December that nothing counts until it affects Sydney. It was after Sydney had a couple of days of bad smoke.

Sure to be careful, but the rain bands going across the state yesterday left no doubt that there was significant rain over a wide area, including fire grounds. I wouldn't expect the RFS or anyone to say anything that would lessen the immediacy of the disaster, as they still need resources and employers to be generous to the volunteers, for instance.

The radar pictures gives a good idea of the breadth and amount of rain over a wide area; the rain gauges give spot readings (not telling you anything you don't know :) ). I'm sure everyone's had the experience of having torrential rain at their place with little in the official gauge a km or so away, or vice-versa.

Agreed - however we have been sucked in many times over the last two months thinking we had good rains heading our way when looking at the radar and we never got a drop because it was just smoke.

Getting back to the NSW fires . Number of incidents has dropped from over 100 to 90 as of today. More important only 5 are out of control, the rest are under control or close to it. Continuing cooler conditions and more rain on Sunday/Monday should see more drops in incidents.

I did notice that an emergency warning has been issued for the Mt Buffalo fires in the Victorian Alps

A sobering article about insurance payouts. It doesn’t surprise me as in the very few and fortunately minor events that I have had, I have not found insurance assessors particularly having had any people skills and do assume that you are to blame.

A friend of mine had exactly that experience when her house burnt down in the 2003 fires. They claimed they were over insured and wouldn’t pay out the insured amount and my friend was reduced to arguing about what taps cost, but of course had no proof of anything.

My one experience with insurance was good. Thieves broke into our office and stole all our computers etc. Most professional thieves ever. One of my staff had yellow post it notes down the side of her computer. The thieves removed them, placed them neatly on her desk and then stole the computer. Our insurance was very good about that, but then it was clearly stolen goods and police involved.

An OCD neat thief! 😐

I’ve had a fire claim for a radiator that somehow tripped the multi plug socket that burst into flames. The insurance company went all out to help me but I do remember the assessment process was rather prolonged. We have always had a fireproof cabinet where everything important was kept including stamp collection and items that can’t be replaced.

I wasn't game to go to reading the full lecture...

I did scope the conference program...

Down to 78 incidents in NSW now (and a couple of those aren’t bush fires). Only 1 marked as out of control. If the cooler weather continues and we get the promised rain it is looking good.

Mr FM’s fish people from Narooma were back today and they were fine (apart from problems when they lost power). They said they thought the Oyster people from up the coast hadn’t lost any sheds either, but all the oyster beds were closed due to the ash.
