Bushfires 2019/2020!

The smoke has just settled in again within the past half hour, Southern suburbs will be worse, Daughter says it's like rain but it's ash.
It’s coming through the dog door again. My nose was very twitchy and I went to the laundry to check and very strong smoke smell. :(

It was a very pleasant morning in Kambah (Heights) today, as the wind was from the west.
By late afternoon the wind was gusting from the south and once again pushing smoke and fire towards the southern suburbs.
Water bombing continued for most of the day with time being called just before 7pm.
The strategy is interesting. A C525 has being stooging around all day and when the DC10 leaves CBR it goes to meet the DC10. They form up with the Citation leading the tanker on an appropriate vector for the bombing run.

I don't understand why they need to give parts of the same fire different names simply because it moved into a different jurisdiction. (eg, the parts of fire to the south of Canberra within the ACT is named Orroral Valley, yet the part in NSW is named Clear Range.)

If the Orroral Valley fire were to link up with the Adaminaby fire to the SW and the Good Good fire to the SE, there would be a continuous stretch of fire/burnt land from Gippsland, west part way towards Albury, north towards Gundagai, then east through the ACT to the NSW coast and north to Nowra.fire.png

They actually were two different fires, although I think embers from Orroral started Clear Range and then they joined up - Saturday maybe. I guess it helps to keep the names as well, as different jurisdictions take responsibility although they cooperate. If you listen to the ACT ESA broadcasts they are responsible for what is happening in ACT’s rural areas e.g Tharwa, Naas Rd etc, whereas NSW is responsible for threats to Bredbo, Michelago.

a third fire called Calabash has now started from embers and is separate at the moment, but could well end up joining up.

The good news is with the reversal of the Indian ocean Dipole there is now much more chance of good rains. The second half of this week should see large falls on the QLD and NSW Coasts but decent rains inland as well.Could see most fires substantially tamed.

Just watched the replay of Four Corners about the fires. Very frightening stuff and very sad. Then watched Media Watch straight after and got very angry. Argh! Can't explain. You have to watch it.

In CBR :

At approximately 3:30pm today, an aircraft working on the Orroral Valley Fire encountered turbulence causing 2,500 litres of retardant to be released on Parkes Way.
ACT Fire & Rescue are on scene and are working with the Environmental Protection Authority at the impacted area which includes the carpark at Rond Terrace and Anzac Parade at Rond Pond.
A number of vehicles may have been covered with a light pink dust. Anyone who has been directly affected is advised to wash their vehicle down with water.
The retardant is non-toxic and there is no immediate risk to the health and safety of people or property. If irritation occurs seek medical advice at your GP or walk-in centre.

Just been listening to the ESA broadcast. They are putting a lot of resources into protecting the wetlands, Birrigai and Tidbinbilla. Hoping to do back burning to stop the fire joining up with the Adaminaby one. You get the sense that they feel they are on top of the threat to Tharwa and Canberra southern suburbs.

It would appear that the fire near Canberra Airport was started on accident by beekeepers monitoring government owned biosecurity research hives.

Which means that both bushfires this season in the ACT were started by government agencies/contractors on accident.

It’s unfortunate but with everything so dry to be quite honest anything could have started them.

Apologies if this link has been posted previously, and I make no comment other than to say that it is informative: Earth on Fire

I’m thinking this wont be the last case that will see the state governments tested in the courts.

Similar action saw the QLD gov authorities guilty for mismanagement of dam water levels.
