Buying Air Canada Aeroplan points

hum I wonder if the percent bonus is random or based on your customer profile. Can those who received > 100% share their profile; e.g. do you fly AC paid fares a lot, are you more than a basic member, have you bought lots of points in the past???

for myself on the base bonus of 100% - I have bought points in the past during promos - say 250,000 in total - earned minimal points on paid fares - am an entry level member - do not have any CCs which accrue points which can be transferrer to AC.

I’ve bought points once or twice before. Enough points for 2 business class tickets back from UK ( via Mauritius ).
Never flown Air Canada.
Maybe I was just lucky.

110%. Bought about 80K points once before. I’ve been a member of aeroplan for about 12 or 13 years. I used to fly them a great deal but haven’t to the last five years, ie since the new program began. I have some future bookings, but my aeroplan number is not in them.

Have 1 point from somewhere, apart from that no activity since signing up back in 2020.
Have points in several programs so wont be taking up this offer.
However I am considering applying for the HSBC star alliance card & going for the 50K Aeroplan points.

Received 100% bonus point offer. Bought 200K. used 180K for 2 X J MEL-SIN-PEN and SIN-MEL (all SQ) for next year. All up AUD2198 per person (including taxes).

Received 120% bonus offer so bought 220K for $3500 CAD ($3940 AUD with ANZ Rewards Travel card). Used 160K of these (~$2850) plus $250 AUD charges for DEL-SIN-SYD flight on Singapore Air so about $3100 for two in J.

Happy with that, going over (which I booked with Velocity) quoted prices was over $4550 each! Coming back was cheaper but still about $3500 each for J. I actually had enough Velocity points to get back but with Velocity availability 3+ weeks behind SQ had already seen some of preferred sites become available as Savers (which are what's available to Velocity - and even then only some flights) whereas AC availability seems to be the same as Krisflyer. Note this is booking almost at the limit (flight back is 31 Oct next year).

I have compared multiple routes/times and I think in some cases AC availability is better than Krisflyer. You can book a waitlisted flight shown on Krisflyer on AC.

Limited data in my case but from what I have seen would certainly tend to agree on more availability, have also seen some (but don’t think all) waitlisted flights appear.

Looking at flights, looks like majority of availability is via Singapore Airlines.

Any idea how the thai/ANA flights work? Is availability only available in the near term? Doesn't seem like much options > 6 months out.

Always the risk with buying points and why I normally wait to see flights I want before purchasing unless you are happy to have them just sit idle in your account. No guarantee anything will open up

So I got the bonus offer for 100% and bit the bullet for 200k miles . Aussie costs $3940.05.

Firstly tried the purchase on my 28 degrees card which got declined so I tried on my amex card which got declined. So currently im left with nearly $8,000 pending on both my cards and not a point.

haven't purchased yet.. still tossing it up, wasn't expecting to spend $4000 AUD for 200k points at this stage. When i have a look at the promotions looks like 100% bonus seems to be maybe once or twice a year and the rest is less bonus %.

ROFL - this happened to me last month when i was going to take the plunge on the 85% promo. Even after I indicated that it wasn't fraudulent, it let me buy it, but then a few days later the purchase cancelled as it wasn't paid. Was all a bit weird.

Everyone’s situation is different and some people love to buy points on sale and just bank them until something comes along whilst others with only purchase when they see flights they want.
They do have some good availability from time to time but depends what you are looking for

Even if you don't have specific dates/flights in mind it's probably worth looking at some potential options (it's rare for people to have absolutely no idea of where they might go next!) which will give you a bit of an idea of availability etc. I'm not as anti as some about buying points, some of my best purchases were where I had no definite plans but thought the offer was too great to miss.

But equally you need to feel comfortable that if/when you do want to use you'll have some chance of doing so.
