Told by call centre staff they couldn't add a BNE-SYD on a SYD-LAX J booking and needed to be seperate.

Is this a new rule or general incompetence? How are people getting awards repriced and done as oneworld awards if this is not even possible.

Look up “married segments”. This has happened to me more than once and yes, it’s incredibly frustrating. It’s not a “new rule” but it might not be “general incompetence” either.

Long story short: the airline might have determined to make SYD-LAX awards available, but not BNE-SYD-LAX. Like I wrote: incredibly frustrating.

On one occasion it took me four calls to get the booking done. On another occasion I tried again, but gave up when each agent gave me exactly the same answer.

yeah but can't I just pay the extra 8,000 points for the Y award so its on the same PNR?

Likewise can I add an extra return later or is pretty much everything needed to be done online at the start?

It’s a system block preventing domestic connections.

Unless you have been offered the domestic connection at the time of searching, you will be unable to add it unless you can get through to Hobart.

It blocks both ways. If you search and secure BNE-SYD first, the SYD-LAX disappears. If you lock in SYD-LAX first, all the domestic connections disappear.

If you book the domestic connection the day before or after you can get it included in the original ticket, although it might cost you more points, unless capped under a OWA.

Why would you pay again ?

They should be able to link the two bookings if you call up

Give them both booking references and ask for them to be linked .

I believe many (including myself) asked Hobart call center why other call center couldn't add the segments. As far as I know, no Hobart agent ever explained it was a married segment logic. But yea this call center knows how to add those segments.
I am wondering if someone tried via facebook messengers. OP should try and report imho.

I don’t believe this is married segments. Married segments are two or more sectors that must be sold together.

This is potentially a form of revenue control/yield management. But it’s not married segments?

That's what married segment are! To stop or prioritise flights with certain connections.

You can see this for yourself in expert flyer, try LAX-SYD vs LAX-MEL. Sometimes the LAX-SYD will have availability that won't show on LAX-SYD-MEL (even though both LAX-SYD and SYD-MEL has it); or the reverse where LAX-SYD-MEL will have a seat (eg U) but LAX-SYD won't.

There is zero point in doing this, as confirmed by MadRooster.

QF protects QF-QF separate bookings. Just show up at the first airport and asked to be checked through.

You can definitely add segments with ease, it's if they're within 24 hours of another flight, that will marry and change availability. If you add flights with 24 hour buffers, there won't be a problem.

A bit of a scam, seemingly.

It's not a scam, it's a feature working as intended. It can be worked around if you can speak to the right person, but it's not a right.

Is a 'feature' the same as an 'enhancement' in airline lingo?

A feature that benefits the airline, yes. But it can benefit you too if you wanted that LAX-SYD-MEL seat that nobody was looking for as they wanted LAX-SYD.

This isn't just a points thing. My TA recently had to get a segment unmarried, that resulted from two completely separate revenue tickets placed on a single PNR (Finnair flights).

The whole skip lagging thing is another example.
