Can airline food be tasty?

As a vegetarian who mostly travels Y, plane food is one of my biggest gripes, I often joke with my travel companions about whether I will score the eggplant mousakka or the chickpea chermoula (both as vile as they sound and come with an appetising frozen bread rock, 3 x lettuce leaves and a green banana), because special meals just never seem to change...

Also vego... and you're right, those meals don't change, so these days i request vegan meals.. and I'm pretty happy with the change! It's nice to have more 'real' food & less heavy bread/cheese/egg stuff when I'm flying.. it seems they're a bit more inventive with the vegan meals, I've had some tasty selections.
I do vegan meals at conferences now too.. to avoid pitching a fit if i had to eat one more egg/cheese or soggy salad sandwich or quiche ("you can eat bacon if you're vegetarian, right?")

I'm vego aswell. The best vego meals i've had in order (in Y) SQ, MH and QF. As the meals generally arrive first & i finish eating whilst everyone is getting served - i take that opportunity to brave the toilets. :-|

Bit of deviation here...article in link sums up info on free food on US carriers:

Which Airlines Still Give Free Food? | The Daily Meal

This is what annoys the economic rationalist bit of my brain - the food isn't 'free' at all; it's built into the price of the ticket. That's one reason why LCCs do appeal to me (unlike their efforts with hidden surcharges, luggage charges, cramped seating etc): they make the cost of the food transparent, and allow you to choose how much to spend...

Having said that, am very much looking forward to trying the 'free' J meals on VN and AF soon. They should hopefully be (much) better than the dreck served up on the last overseas flight I took (UA transpac in Y)...

My worst meal by far would have to have been on Air Vanuatu. The choices were cottage pie or fish pasta. The cottage pie tasted like dog food and the fish tasted funny that I though it wise not to continue (as I tried both as they didn't change the menu from the forward to return). I can't really explain how bad they were and I really am not that fussy when it comes to plane food. I have had some ok meals and I have tried the special meals which are pretty good as you get fed first! I did get chicken nuggets once in a low fat meal!! My son was quite jealous. The microwaved spinach and ricotta roll for I think it was breakfast on VS was memorably bad but on the whole some surprisingly tasty meals in my experience.

Bad airline meals seem to be a regional specialty, Air Pacific is also always good with some intriguing delights... Last time they served us some plastic wrapped thing of a sandwich with two slices of pale stinky sausage on it for breakfast which was absolutely vile...

Look out for an article on this on The Conversation website next week by Prof Merlin Thomas

I had a lovely rack of lamb last week on QF11 from Syd to Lax. Breakfast of mushrooms and bacon was lovely as well. In fact this was the best flight I have ever had. Staff friendly and helpfuland a very smooth flight on A380. Well. Done Qantas :-)

Best Y food has to be the from HKG to PER where they served duck!

Worst Y food has to be the synthetic egg they serve on my PER to ZNE flights

EK used to serve a duck orange salad with the meals in y.
It was great bring the only duck eater in a party of four.
Even better was the fact it was on each leg going to and from Europe!

I find QF J and F food fantastic. I can never say no!

CX J food very underwhelming, except the dim sum. AA F food ok (for American food!) BA J food good (love the bacon sarnies for long haul brekky).

Best food though? SAS in J. Amazing Scandinavian food. Wow.

Perhaps my strangest meal offering was many years ago in Hungary, flying Malev... we were each given a box of chocolates.
I remember it because i was half drunk from the brandy soaked cherries inside the chocolate balls.
