I was clicking around the VA website and looking at my upcoming trip BNE-SYD-LAX, and it seemed like I could select seats. I was able to select them but then when I got to the return trip (LAX to BNE) it said that had to be done at check in and took me back to the start. I could not make the seat selection stick.

Does anyone know if it is actually possible to select seats in advance of the normal 48 hours prior to flying, when you check in?

I haven't had an trouble booking inbound or out bound flights and selecting seats BNE - LAX -BNE at the time off booking naturally well before T48 ........
There is normally no trouble getting row five in 'J' (if you want it - personally I'm not a fan of the 'curtaining off' they do) or the front row of P.E., again if you want that (possibly to avoid 'Reclinus Maximus' sitting in front of you the whole 13 hr. trip ). I think you would pretty much have the pick of Y of what is left also.

Not so sure on selecting seats a bit after the booking is made as I try and lock seats in straight up..... I'd give the service centre a call, I'd be surprised if they couldn't help you out. Good luck and let us know how you get on. Cheers.

Online seat selection has a cut off when the aircraft is at a certain % full. Do you have status with VA ? If you do you can call and ask them to manually allocate seating for you.

I am Platinum status. I gave them a call and they were happy to allocate seats on the phone. They said that I should be able to do it myself online.

I had a similar problem recently. I have a SYD->BNE->LAX in two weeks, no problem allocating seats for SYD->BNE or even the LAX->SYD return but BNE->LAX said i would be allocated at checkin and could not select seats. I rang up and they said i should be able to do this online but they will be more than happy to do it for me now.
