Canberra - Hotel Recommendations

Prozac, you're right in our neck of the woods. The Realm Hotel is our local 'pub'!

LTL, mine too!

Have a great visit Prozac, i trust the ceremony will be moving and appropriate recognition for your late father's service.

I had dinner with two visiting Dutch government officials a few years ago and learned a lot that I didn't know about the history of the Netherlands in our region and the East Indies. They had both served years earlier and their espirit de corps was undiminished. Wonderful experience.

I can recommend Avenue Hotel Canberra. It is new and very well appointed with the interior design by Peter Morrissey. The breakfasts are pretty good too, in the Marble & Grain restaurant. As well as being located on Northbourne Avenue in the heart of the CBD, the hotel is only 5 mins by car from the War Memorial (2.5 km), or a 25 minute walk.

OzEire, the Ostani staff are always so friendly we keep going back and back and back. Last weekend I went to order a coffee and the girl started to make my G&T!
We keep meaning to go further afield but get lazy when it gets a bit cold at night (or d.ay if the truth be known)

Maple and Clove has good coffee, but it closes early. Lilotang has interesting Japanese and Malamay is great for a special meal but it sounds like you are having enough of them as it is. The Calabrese pizza is our fav at Ostani.

OK, getting excited. Only a few days to go before we head of down the M5 to Canberra. I know we are getting wined and dined for 2 lunches but we will still need to eat something at night and will need a dinner on Sunday night when we arrive. I know you have already offered some ideas but any of you locals have any more dinner suggestions in the Barton area?

edit: I do not have an expense account. :)

Barton is a bit dead at night, especially outside the hotels. I'd suggest going a little further afield to Manuka or Kingston.

If you are at the Burbury it is an easy walk (i.e. 10 mins or so) to either Kingston or Manuka with lots of eateries. We prefer Kingston. China Plate is a good Chinese/Asian and very popular with the pollies but pretty cheap and very friendly. We don't like Me & Mrs Jones much - a few ordinary experiences. The Belgian Beer House has great mussels, Santa Lucia is good for Italian, Chaing Rai is OK for Thai. There are lots of others as well. A but further is the Kingston Foreshore - restaurants there as well.
Manuka has a swag - Kopi Tian is good, Bellucis we can take or leave, Le Rendezvous is one we do not like - it seems to have gone off (and flat tonic in the G&T to boot).
Close to the Burbury - you may be able to sign into the Press Club as its bar meals are OK, we have had tummy upsets after the Rydges bar food but there is a restaurant, haven't been to Brassey House.
We walk to all of these for dinner so not far at all.
Ostani has a new dinner menu, just been there tonight, a bit of Minister spotting going on. Pork cheeks were pretty good! I had a decaf expresso as last time it was 'boing' when I went to bed. Tasted OK.
Hope this helps.

This is just what I am after esp. the cheap ones. ;) We are having a lunch at Embassy Monday, Ostani on Tuesday so looking for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday nights. Will check out China Plate. Belgian Beer House sounds interesting if only for the thought of the Belgium Beer.

May try Kopi Tian...flat G&T will upset the bride so Bellucis is out.

Straight coffee ok for me without side effects. May try out Ona Cafe as owner Sasa has just won World Barrister Championship. Just gotta find it. ;)

And the RUC (Rugby Union Club) at the lake end of Brisbane Ave for a nice parmy, or Brodburger at the back of the Glassworks if you want and overpriced (but tasty) burger 'experience' .... I miss the little red caravan.

RUC sounds good too and walking distance. Sounds like price will exclude Brodburger I'm afraid.. :)

As of a few months ago, I now live significantly closer to Brodburger than I used to... this is not necessarily good for me...

Just found the Brodburger website. Handy to Barton. As mentioned pricey but perhaps there is value there. May check it out Tuesday evening. Still looking for a Sunday dinner.

It's pretty cold in the evenings so keep in mind that you will want a well insulated inside place where ever you go. Bring quite a few clothes to layer.

I'd say both the quality and quantity of burger you'll receive there is definitely proportionate for the price. Not at all uncommon to see undergrads from the ANU managing to justify burning substantial amounts of their student budgets on the stuff :p (Indeed, I sometimes struggle to get through their larger burgers, and I can eat a fair bit...)

Wish I could give other recommendations around the area (given I actually live around Kingston), but I lead a generally unexciting life that doesn't involve a huge amount of dining out...

Do hope the ceremony goes well :)

Thanks for the tip. It is a bit colder earlier this year...bloody global warming.

Is a cook it yourself steak and a seat by the fire of interest? If so, for $12 the historic (for CBR), Kingston pub has the "small" steak, onions, salad and bread roll.

For some reason I can't post the link to the menu. If you can, book a table near the fire, it's pretty popular. This link gives an intro. Kingston Hotel | Restaurants, Clubs, Style, Arts, Functions and more

Oh yes, haven't been to Kingston pub for years and forgot about it, but it is a good place for a cheap pub meal. Thanks Get me out of here for the reminder. Must call by again.
