Good morning everyone,

A bit of a noob here so apologies if I'm asking something obvious. I'm lowly Bronze and found a J class fare from Helsinki to Sydney via Tokyo with JAL in August next year, so I booked it. I then later saw a Paris to Tokyo option pop up on the same date. This would be more convenient for me, but I can't seem to cancel just the HEL-Tokyo leg and book the Paris-Tokyo leg on the qantas website - I guess I screwed up by not booking the flights separately, it looks like they are married segments now and the only way I could do this would be to cancel the whole ticket and then re-book? I don't want to risk that as I don't know whether the J class seat I booked for Tokyo-Sydney would re-appear online. Have tried contacting QF on social media but of course they are no help (used to be so helpful pre covid, now I'm lucky to get a response). Worried about calling the call center and my whole booking getting screwed up.

I suspect I'm out of luck, but any advice appreciated. Thank you.

Hi have you enough points to book the new route ? Does the entire new route still include business class availability ? If so do that and then cancel the original. If you don't have enough points AND business class availability is showing call frequent flyer services ask for cancel and request fast track points refund and then book the new route. There is some risk someone else will take the seats in the meantime but there is also the risk that Bronze call centre wont be able to facilitate the change and mess things up.

Hi - yes I have enough points but there are no TOKYO-SYDNEY flights on that date anymore that show J class on the website, I may have already booked one of the few seats that was available in J class. So in other words, as things currently stand there is only J class available between PARIS CDG and Tokyo Haneda with JAL on the date I want to fly in August. If I cancel the whole trip, I am worried I will lose my J class seat for Tokyo - Sydney and won't get it back even if I try to rebook.

Yes I agree you might lose J class Tokyo-Syd and fly Y on that sector. I guess you will just have to weigh that up with flying out of Paris or Helsinki depending on your personal circumstances. Finland and France are rather distant from each other ! You could sound out call centre and ask if they can do it. I am bronze but during covid lockdown I got to experience Hobart call centre who were competent in changes such as yours but without high status you are stuck with other agents.

Something to consider, if JAL use a B787 between HND and SYD, economy class seats are more comfortable than other airline B787's as JAL have 8 seats across as opposed to the more common 9 seats.

Don‘t mess with it.

Safest option is to live with what you’ve got. And for the love of god, don’t let the call centre touch it!
LOL yes this was the view I was leaning towards. Just thought I'd hit you guys up in case you had any solutions. Not a huge drama, I will be in London immediately before as my trip itinerary has changed and Paris would have been easier to get to, but Helsinki is a 2 hour flight so not a huge deal.

Definitely, though having had back issues in the past with long haul from Europe, I'd prefer to go J
