Carjacking at Hertz BNE Dom

From what I've heard since all the car rental companies simply lease the carpark bays from BAC, it would be up to them to install such device. Something which has been asked for numerous times. Hopefully these recent events are enough to warrant them.

Ah BAC. Well if it's up to them it certainly won't happen anytime soon. It would be nice if they just service aerobridges or baggage belts properly but one can dream.

/tangential ponder/

I wonder, since they may not find the driver of the X5, what will happen to the rental excess for the driver of the red car? Will he/she be charged for "damage" as presumably they hadn't yet returned the car!

My thoughts exactly.

Don't rental cars have tracking devices these days?

That's exactly what I asked when I was there and the answer was no.

Is it commonplace to have rentals with tracking devices? Are they legal (wouldn't there have to be some provision in your agreement saying that your position is being tracked)?

They could install one of those tyre shredding security features instead of a boom gate. So when you exit, an attendant lowers the spikes and you drive out, but if you simply try to drive straight through you wont get far...

I have seen rental companies in the States use those.

Yes, very common it seems in the USA, where I've collected rental vehicles, anyway. Even at some parking lots.

Bollards that raise/lower, also.

Years ago I was involved in an attempt robbery/carjacking in one of Sydney's western suburbs. I managed to escape and drove to the police station. They kept the car, which was badly damaged, as evidence. I reported the car hire company about the incident and in the end I wasn't even charged for the rental.
I think this would be a fair result in this case.

I had something similar to this in a vehicle which I rented last year in the USA. I had no idea it was there, until I was adjusting the rear view mirror, and suddenly a voice started talking to me asking if I needed assistance or if there was a problem. LOL

I would hope so. Poor driver was probably a little rattled though!

I also know from co-workers who use hertz that they have to collect their keys from the office since a car was stolen from hertz. They have been doing that since late last year though.

AVIS in MEL have the tyre shredders in place at all their exits to avoid situations like this, and I do enjoy just walking up to the car and getting in.

I found the keys in the car this week, same as every week before and after the incident.
A security guard is now standing near the exit at Hertz BNE to make sure no one tries to steal a car again.

Sorry, was talking about hertz in Mel :(. Collegues who collect their cars from there often have to line up and wait to collect their keys vs. just walking up to a car. Might just be a Mel thing?

Maybe it is. Can't comment about MEL as I didn't rent a car there for a while. I can only say that in SYD & BNE keys are left in the cars.

In Mel: After a certain time at night the keys are no longer left in the cars.

Security guard? Haha. That's not a solution at all.

Yeah, what's a security guard going to do about someone ramming through the gate? Stand firm and hold up their hand in a stop gesture? Or gun the miscreants down?

Either way, death is not the answer to theft.

Slight correction.....BNE DOM keys are left in the cars.

BNE INT is a right PITA with usually only 1 person at the desk and systems seemingly designed to take forever. Also with Hertz BNE INT, I've found the various staff to be the most ignorant and useless I've experienced at any car rental location for many, many years.

I dont bother with international anymore, not after leaving a car there and being told I damaged it.

Just for a laugh, my last pick-up from there I asked the guy to check my correct FFer account was used (still after three hundred thousand time trying to change it, it still brings up a DJ account instead of VS). He checked only to find the DJ number so I asked him to change it my VS number and gave him the number....which all he did was change it from DJ to VS and left the old number...........I decided I was dealing with a smart a*#ed moron, so left it to change at drop off. Drop off tried but after about 15 minutes of trying I gave up and left it (especially as the old VS "bonus" is now gone).....

I'm changing back to Europcar as at least with them I always got a pretty good upgrade. The VS "bonus" was really the only value I saw in Hertz.

You haven't been to POM recently, have you?

The police will gun down carjackers without a 2nd thought if given the opportunity. Carjacking happens with regular monotony in POM but although the carjackers often have weapons, they don't usually use them. This week has seen a turn for the worse with a failed carjacking turning into a gun fight.........not far from the Ozzie High Comm compound (appropriately tagged "Fort Sh#t Scared), but more disturbingly near my regular hangout...the Aviat Club. Not happy JAN!

Oh the memories. The old boy moved to Lae a few years ago. Didn't take long for his initiation. He's 60+ now, it was his first that he mentioned. Exceptional considering he's been in png since he was 19. I had a good mate who ran guard dog security; png's largest privately owned security firm. He was legally strapped with a glock 24/7. It was small comfort when I visited. He would tell me about the difficult situations he negotiated. Unfortunately, the land of the unexpected is a title earned with little effort.
