I had some friends come back from Sydney recently. In their carry-on couple had 2 bottles of champagne and the other had 2x 250ml perfume bottles as presents. The only excuse they could come up with was it had been a very good, LONG weekend.
As you will all expect, the liquids were confiscated and lost.

My question is, if you get past immigration and get to security with excess liquids, is there any way of getting back into the terminal, purchasing a small bag and checking the luggage on? I know its not easy, but think of the alcohol.

The other option is to follow the lead of the German who wasnt allowed to take his 1L of duty free vodka on his final domestic leg. He protested by drinking it on the spot. Then he fell over and missed his flight because he was admitted to hospital.

Any thoughts?

I expect that if you asked to head back and check the liquids in, you would be allowed (at least as NZ citizens). I guess there would be a problem if you are on a single entry visa (I don't know if we issue those or not), or are been deported (in that case carry on liquids is probably the last of your worries), but other than that provided you had time I can't see how they could stop you from returning back into the country to check in liquids.

Of course this is not such a problem at airports when security is before emigration (eg BNE).

Was this NZ customs at AKL who took them?
I thought you pay the NZ duty ?

It was at Sydney. They purchased from general shops, not duty free and had them in the hand luggage

It would be up to immigration but I don't think they'd be too willing to have to reclear you into the country just for the purpose of checking in LAGS with the airline.

I think this is the key here - if security is before customs. I know at BNE Intl if you go through the screening point & you've got LAGS security tell you that you can go back to checkin those items.

If doing this what you need to take into account is that baggage acceptance is still open for that flight as it may close 1 hour prior to departure for international flights.

Secondly, keep in mind that if checking in an extra piece of luggage, will that exceed your baggage allowance? Many airlines have baggage allowance of one piece so may want to charge you extra for another piece.

It's probably better before heading to the airport to do a quick check of what LAGS you have so you have the option of packing them in to your checked luggage if required prior to arriving at checkin.

This was a discussion about what could have been done to save the champers. The 2 couples each had only one suitcase, and were allowed one each. They arrived with plenty of time at the airport and would have been ok for baggage closing.
We all agreed that they were "unwise", but were wondering about the What If options.

thanks
