I am travelling to Sydney next week from the gold coast on Jetstar. I am taking 1 carry on travel bag and i am wondering can i pack packets of chips, muesilie bars ,shapes biscuits with me. All unopened of course but i dont want to eat it on the plane. I want to make my 3 day trip to Sydney cheaper and on a budget when i stay at my hotel. Thanks.

Shouldn't be a problem at all. I've taken all manner of food (barring fruit of course, damn QLD fruit flies!) on domestic flights with no problems.

Absolutely no problem with taking those kinds of foods domestically. It's only when you fly overseas to other countries that you need to declare any food items to quarantine authorities on arrival.

I would avoid taking fruit or vegetables interstate & as there are some restrictions (each state is different) eg for Western Australia you can't import fruit, vegetables or even honey into the state.

Welcome to AFF Steve.S, what type of ticket do you have? If it is a hand luggage only ticket and you have a weight limit then remember to adhere to it and you'll be fine.

Of course it may just be easier to buy such foodstuffs in Sydney.

Look I love my curries.Mrsdrron wont let me cook them at home.So I cook them when I am in Tasmania, freeze them then bring them back to Queensland in a cooler bag.Once going through security at MEL I was asked what in the h*** do you have in there?Told them my curries and all that was elicited was a laugh.
So if my curries can be carried on your lot will be no problem.

Thanks guys for info. Just one more thing. Can i take cans of baked beans and spaggetti.

Can I suggest perhaps purchasing the baked beans and spaghetti in Sydney instead? For $5 of so probably in total, will save you space in your carry on

Maybe just take enough for one day in case there is a food shortage in SYD.

There is many shops in SYD so you will be fine.

I would not take anything and just purchase when you get to SYD

Actually depending on where you are staying the shop availability might not be that great. If staying in the CBD area you are limited to a small Coles and small woollies and 7-11 and obviously 7-11 type stores are expensive.

surely it would be easier to buy those at a supermarket rather than carry them (they can get heavy!)

The Town hall woollies is an ok size. If you want a small Woollies try my Sydney woollies in Surry Hills, now that is small.

To the OP, you're much better off buying from a supermarket once you get to Sydney. They do have all of those foods there. That's what I do for my 3 days a week in Sydney. I also bring over 2 frozen meals in my carry on luggage

I'm with the others, buy the food in Sydney, the price won't be any different (or if it is not by much), but when carrying on you'd risk going over your weight limit. Flying jetstar especially on a hand luggage only ticket, you may find that the food pushes you over your limit and your forced to pay for checked luggage or throw the food out. Either way you nice cheap trip to Sydney could become quite expensive.

Edit: Just reading the JQ website, if I'm reading this right and you go over your hand luggage limit, it's a min of $70 for checked bags, $70 can buy a lot of food.

And, whatever you do, do NOT take 2 dead animals with you as food on Jetstar - you are only allowed 1 carrion.

Very Droll!

Please lets get back on topic with some useful advice and assistance.

Posted on a wing and a prayer ...

If you crush the chip packets down you might be able to fit more in your hand luggage, but you might have a problem with the weight as removing the air from inside the packet will make them heavier.

If you do take baked beans and spaghetti, you'll be better off taking them out of the cans and putting them into those zip lock plastic bags as they're easier to pack.

And I concur. Shopping at Woolies is the safe way to get your food in SYD. ;)
