Carry on Luggage

$3K Antlers? no way is Antler premium priced luggage! But very good value, one of my favourite carry-on rollers after more than 10yrs is the Antler New Size Zero 55cm, that I think I paid about $150 for.
Which in todays money 10 years later would be.......

Why do people value/go for hard shell carry-ons? They'll only get treated as roughly as the user chooses.

Oh so so many good reasons:

1. Sometimes it becomes necessary to check that carry-on bag on return due to the need to carry-on something else. Hard Shell better protects your items from rain during loading (or walking to/from airport to transport, transport to hotel etc) and also baggage handlers who dont consider the inside contents.

2. They provide better protection for your stuff when some selfish doofus exceeds the carry-on weight allowance and puts their brick of a bag on top of yours in the bin (or even next to but then it moves in flight to squash your stuff)

3. Easier to keep clean, hard surfaces wipe clean and lining zips off and can be washed. Important if ther eis a leak or spillage, fabric bags hard to keep clean).

4. They have 4 weheels which is much easier to manouver than 2 wheels on soft side. Also much easier to balance a handbag or laptop bag on top whilst commuting.

5. They come in many nicer colours, look more stylish; plus coordinate wit your matching checked luggage.

their $3K Antlers

Full price retail barely 10% of that; and there are frequent sales. But of course you are trying to be funny (and not remotely succeeding). July otoh usually at least double the Antler cost for almost not difference other than most models are heavier.

I compared prices and weights and July certainly wasn't double the cost and not even the same cost. While not exactly the same, July here offers 42 litre packing and weighs 3kg and is $275. Free postage. Click the one on the right. Just has no inbuilt power connector.

Antler here offers 38-46 litre, weighs. 2.82kg and is $329

It was at this time last year, when I replaced my luggage.

The equivalent July models at the time were heavier and approx 50% dearer than Antler Stamford which had great discounts if you bought direct from Antler (free delivery) more than 1 (I got one carry-on and 2 medium).

YMMV this year of course. But since there are many Antler suppliers, many opportunities to find a deal. There is currently 30% off applied at checkout at Antler.

Ok. Well, guess I'm buying - todays prices. Received multi order discount and the code provided earlier.

Just took a look and July prices have certainly reduced quite a bit since last year, lucky you.

Still neither brand is remotely near $3k as was being stated.

The set of 3 Antler - cabin, medium and large is $1137 full price and currently 30% less than that - last year could get all 3 sizes as a set for $750 on sale including delivery.

Here we go 🙂

Ok. never had to do that in over 1,200 flights so it won't be a criteria for my choice.

2. They provide better protection for your stuff when some selfish doofus exceeds the carry-on weight allowance and puts their brick of a bag on top of yours in the bin (or even next to but then it moves in flight to squash your stuff)

So when my carry on has been crushed by some doofus shoving their rigid case up against it, when there was really no room, I know where to look? 🙂

3. Easier to keep clean, hard surfaces wipe clean and lining zips off and can be washed. Important if ther eis a leak or spillage, fabric bags hard to keep clean).

Black soft side needs no cleaning.

4. They have 4 weheels which is much easier to manouver than 2 wheels on soft side. Also much easier to balance a handbag or laptop bag on top whilst commuting.

Well we know where 4 Vs 2 wheel ends don't we? 🤣 Keep at it.

Black goes with everything.

Yes, it was a light hearted remark. Should have gone through to the keeper. But I have had some nice feedback 😎

Oops. 🤭 Was that your case I squashed when I shoved my hard shell in the locker because some doofus had taken up all the room?

and I've seen a bag put in the overhead locker sideways because the handle wouldn't fully close!

Ok. never had to do that in over 1,200 flights so it won't be a criteria for my choice.

How exceptionally lucky to have never had a late aircraft swap/downgrade to one with no overhead bins in all those flights. Happens frequently flying to/from CBR, carry-on has to go in hold if wont fit under those tiny seats (and cabin bags do not fit, only a small handbag).

I have also needed to check cabin bag when on a HLO business trip I unexpectedly was required to bring back additional devices (including an extra laptop) which are not permitted in the hold. As i never exceed carry-on weight or piece allowance, cabin bag had to be checked.

Also when unexpectedly given gifts containing more than 100ml of liquid needing to be put in something to check-in on an international flight.

And in event that a connection is late and all bins are full when you board last, the FA may send your bag below.

Just because you haven't needed to do it , doesn't mean it isn't a consideration for others.

Nope, I don't abuse the carry-on allowance, my at weight or under weight carry-on always stowed correctly; and i board early to ensure it goes in the bin above my own seat. Blame the late comers or those who exceed limits for shoving extra stuff in the bin.

If your stuff is packed in a rigid case, you have extra protection. By your own admission you frequently exceed the HL weight limits so more likely it is your bag doing the squashing of someone elses.

Black soft side needs no cleaning.

Nope, a black bag isn't magically immune from becoming dirty. If something dirties a bag inside or out of any colour I want to be able to clean it easily.

Items inside can leak or leak out of another adjacent bag in the bin. Mud can be splashed by a car driving by in wet conditions as you walk down the street. Someone can trip and accidently spill foodstuffs which are going to reek if not cleaned off properly in the lounge.

Well we know where 4 Vs 2 wheel ends don't we?

Yep with 2 wheelers having far less versatility.

Black goes with everything.

Does it? Colourists would disagree.

Anyway Im positive Pushka will be very happy having selected a hard case with 4 wheels that can be expanded, checked if needed, and cleaned easily if needed.

And ive seen just as many bags put in that way due to lazy passengers not wanting to spend an extra second placing wheels or short side if no wheels to the back.

Airlines need to better enforce carry-on limits and if the handle wont retract as required, then to the hold it goes.

4 wheels only really work on hard, smooth, even surface, and when the bag is weighted correctly. That's why you see people pulling 4 wheelers on two wheels. Yes, I have a 4 wheeler.

With 4 wheeler you have option to use it as a 4 wheeler (and ime the surface does not have to be particularly smooth) or as a 2 wheeler. If im going somewhere with crazy uneven surfaces and loads of stair only options then Id not take any cases at all but rather my 75L travel pack and a 35-40L carry on pack and wear them.

Also I can drive 2 x 4 wheelers back to back with one hand, leaving my other hand free for my phone or ticket or a cup of coffee.

However a 2 wheeler can only be pulled behind you all the time making it largely unsuitable for balancing a smaller laptop bag or purse on top (as you cant have eyes on the smaller bag) and if you have two cases i.e. a cabin and a checked one, you need to have one in each hand, so no free hand which is inconvenient.

Having owned and travelled with both 2 and 4 wheeled and soft and hard sided checked and cabin bags, can honestly say Id never go back to soft 2 wheel in any size case.

If its soft might as well take a back pack which is easier to deal with and has rain cover.

Four-wheels take up more space therefore less capacity + more things that can be broken.

It's funny. I bought a cheap two wheel cabin bag from Amazon earlier this year. I tried it out and wondered what the heck I was thinking when I bought it - it only has two wheels, And - it's soft sided 😳. I never used it and it's been consigned to the storage locker downstairs. I usually use all four wheels the way I guide it and only ever on two wheels on cobblestones. Or those horrible bumpy things that pavements and airports have when crossing the road. We were due to go overseas imminently and just bought a $45 one from KMart which actually - was extremely good.

PS @RooFlyer - I don't manhandle anyone else's luggage and always make sure it is in its own little space.

In some European airports and Perth WA, the path to the car hire is brick paving, which is a challenge for 4 wheels. also my secondary bags, small laptop case or camera bag, have loops to go round the handles on 4 or 2-wheelers.

And yet i walked my 4 wheeler on 4 wheels through the carpark at PER on Sunday over the bricks with zero issues (in fact I was steering 2 of them, mine and my Mums). Maybe I just have mastered technique better.

Noting if you loop a purse or laptop bag around a 2 wheeler it is behind you and you cant see if the pick pockets are helping themselves. 4 wheeler means your valuables can be keep in your line of sight at all times.

WRT capacity my hard cabin case has more useable space than my old soft sides 2 wheeler cabin because the soft one isnt completely square, it slopes at the top end (rather than being the same depth all round) and also had pockets on the outside that were too shallow to be much use, for me better to have extra few cms depth inside. As always YMMV.

Luggage pass-through (or luggage sleeves is another term) are a must of any backpack/messenger I get now. But I've also gotten myself a hold of one of these that I'm yet to use however:

Also need to avoid any wheeled bag with a telescope single arm handle as bags attached via a sleeve just spin on those (again only an issue on 2 wheeled bags)
