Carry on Luggage

Luggage pass-through (or luggage sleeves is another term) are a must of any backpack/messenger I get now. But I've also gotten myself a hold of one of these that I'm yet to use however:

Handy! And doubles as a bag in itself. I don't rally need one as my small bags already have a strap, but good to know.

Oops. 🤭 Was that your case I squashed when I shoved my hard shell in the locker because some doofus had taken up all the room?

I'm sure it wasn't :) ('coz you would have seen me stand up, grab the offending bag and hurl it across the cabin. - you've never seen that, right?) :)

Just because you haven't needed to do it , doesn't mean it isn't a consideration for others.

Again, not an argument. All I said was " so it won't be a criteria for my choice."

My choice, no-others involved.

If your stuff is packed in a rigid case, you have extra protection. By your own admission you frequently exceed the HL weight limits so more likely it is your bag doing the squashing of someone elses.

You are confusing mass Vs volume.

Nope, a black bag isn't magically immune from becoming dirty.

Yet again, not an argument made. I said "Black soft side needs no cleaning"; if its black, it might be dirty, but I don't care. <redacted>

Does it? Colourists would disagree.

I don't even know what a colourist is. Unless they want to tag along with me every time I get changed and pick up my carry-on, its not really relevant, it it? :) 🤷‍♂️

It's funny. I bought a cheap two wheel cabin bag from Amazon earlier this year. I tried it out and wondered what the heck I was thinking when I bought it - it only has two wheels, And - it's soft sided 😳. I never used it and it's been consigned to the storage locker downstairs.

Wish I'd known! I'm in Adelaide, flying out tomorrow. I'd be a likely buyer of it. I'll PM you.

PS @RooFlyer - I don't manhandle anyone else's luggage and always make sure it is in its own little space.

I know. :D I'd say the same, except I'd say ..... own BIG space. Carry-on. laptop bag, jacket. Priority boarding is great.

Nice. I like that. I 'bought' a similar bag like that from the Qantas store earlier this year. A Pierre Cardin one. Used it on the last trip and it was perfect. I could hide it on me (underneath a jacket) and which gave me an extra carry on bag. It doesn't have the back strap to utilise with the handle.

My preference as a HLO traveller is using a mix of soft ( 1.9kg Samsonite 73H spinner - light/4 wheels and strong) and a 2nd bag with sleeve so all luggage together in one place. That said, the latter can be very hard to find so I have great interest about The Travel Buddy. I currently use this

We also have a Samsonite hard shell (again as it is light) namely CLite.

Between us these provide four light HLO which can be carried single handed (2 each). This suits us.

I looked at that one in the store the other day and liked it a lot.

It met our brief as the secondary ‘piggy back’ back and just has one compartment which is all that is needed. Many ‘sling bags’ are over 2.5kg and most (I have found) are designed for laptop use (which does not apply to us).

I'm a hlo traveller across Australia. I have a 2 wheel Targus business bag which means i have easy access to my 15 inch laptop. I also have a camera bag full of camera and electonic paraphernalia. The whole meets the 14 kg limit though biased to the Targus. I know that because it was weighed, and sized, by Qantas on one flight. For international it s a challenge.
PS the camera bag fits in the space under the seat in front. Thiss is for a week in OZ.

Here's a duffel style bags that are available in Australia that include a luggage sleeve to sit on top of a suitcase, not the cheapest options however:

Aer Travel Weekender 35L $330
Available from Australian importer Rushfaster
Aer16TravelWeekender35L_Black_1_1316x1400.jpg

Bellroy Classic Weekender 35L $260
Available directly from Bellroy

And if you want something light and foldable
Aer Go Duffel 2 USD$89
Not currently available in Australia however.

There are also a range of hybrid backpacks/duffels that are also suitable:
Patagonia Mini-MLC 26L $330
Available directly from Patagonia and a few other retailers

The Osprey Daylite 26+6 is also becoming one of the popular ones in the bag nerd communities, but is very hard to find here in Australia (or anywhere at the moment!)

I've spent most of the afternoon re-assessing my carry-on needs, trying to be totally objective - thinking back to recent trips, mainly O/S and picturing what I did with my carry-on both in airports and at hotels, how and when I accessed it, what I put in it and how my current one performed.

I measured and weighted my present one - SwissGear (no model type, and not findable on their web site now) external dimensions incl wheels 58x35x23 and weight 3.2 kg !! That's a bit embarrassing - both over-size and pretty heavy. No wonder I usually go over the carry-on weight allowance :) . IIRC I bought it at DFW when in transit when my previous one failed - not much choice.

So, what I think I need:
Wheels: 2 would be strongly preferred, but I see most models now are 4 wheels (or 4 pairs), so I may need to bow to the inevitable. But I can't believe how much space you lose to the wheels sticking out the bottom - many I've been looking at have up to 6cm difference between external length and packing length. That's well over 4 litres capacity lost, isn't it, if other dimensions are 35 and 23 cm??

Weight: About 2-2.3kg. Given the weight of my current one, maybe up to 2.5kg :p

Material: I can't go past 'soft' sided and expandable. Sometimes ya just gotta stuff more in; flying international business I've never had a problem with a bulging carry-on. Or an overweight one, or needed to be checked in.

Opening: Needs to be long dimension opening, top flap, presenting a tub. No to ones that open in half - no good for opening on hotel luggage racks or chairs, which is where mine go in a hotel room.

Front pocket: Definitely needs a front, easy-access zipped pocket - that's where my pills go, also Airpods case, hard-copy itinerary, plus phone, and the other stuff in my pockets when putting the case through x-ray security.

Locks: Not really necessary - carry-one is not left out of sight when on-the-go.

Price: Under $300.

Charging port etc: No - will add to weight and cost. I'll have a battery if needs be.

So, Bag Nerds - any ideas/suggestions/places to browse?

This comes closest from what I've found (price :() Samsonite B-LITE 5

My preference is to get under 2kg which mine did https://www.amazon.com.au/Samsonite-Airea/dp/B08MWDQ74J?th=1&psc=1 This is very similar but looks like it can't be purchased in Australia.

I chose a soft sided one rather than the hard case ones because I think I can get more in and I also like the option to tuck my ipad in the zip. I certainly wouldn't have a charging port because I think it would add too much weight

Not sure if you'll be anywhere on your next trip you could buy one cheaper than in Australia

I have the C-Lite and echo other sentiments re price but worth it
Its not cheap but sales do come up and you can get cheaper. I actually bought mine at Melb airport dropping someone off and there was a snap sale at Rolling Luggage! I wanted to buy another and when I was in UK in May went to the Samsonite factory outlet where none were less than $550.

Yes, agree. Like these and we’ve been using the soft samsonites for a long time. I’m too old to have backpacks or ones over the shoulder. Wheels are good.

I'll put my thinking cap on. If you're going to be in Europe or the US anytime soon then your options open up significantly. You could take what you need in a packable duffel, have the new bag shipped to a hotel, then come back happy!
