Familiar looking biscuits!

Every now and then my work requires me travel out to rural areas where the only options for accommodation are a pub or a motel. These biscuits always remind me of the amenity biscuits you get on the tray in the motels with a couple of teabags and a few packets of instant coffee.

Funnily enough I actually love them when staying in a motel, but can't stand them when served them on the plane.

I flew perth to adelaide today on the A320 VARA [va714]

I was pleasantly surprised with the catering!

I got a HOT Mini Moroccan Vegetable Roll, a muffin AND a yoghurt.

(I saved the muffin for an after arrival snack and ate the other two along with my apple and banana that had to be eaten or thrown out before arrival into ADL)

As a little game for myself, I tried to see how much I could source them for. Got down to about 12 cents each, when buying in bulk.

The Victoria sponge that QF were serving for dessert in transcon J last year could be sourced at about 50 cents per serve and those pax were paying a lot more....

They were probably getting more than the sponge though. On VA the biscuit (and a drink) was the whole refreshment....

Agree, but the QF J transcon pax could be paying more than 40 times the price to receive a 50 cent dessert...

Baby swanning_it recently flew VA, BNE-POM on an AMEX disc. tix. She was told she did not qualify for a snack due to the tix, but the FA offered her one anyway. She received (as a favour) a small muffin + comp juice/water. Wow, how lucky that they were nice to her! What a load of bollocks. VA do really want to lose pax. obviously.

PX offer, on the same flight, a substantial meal (including wine) and when charging (ie not a disc/comp flight), are considerably cheaper than VA.

That actually looks like an "enhancement", much better than those tiny gronola bars they give out on the 1hour east coast flight

Sorry, l should have added - that was BNE-PER. 2 dishes to choose from in whY.

Scrambled egg with (i think) - sausage and tomato wedge and potato gem
Frittata, bacon, hash brown, smoky beans

To be honest, the smoky beans are brilliant, just not sure about having something like that on a longer flight....;-)

I was under the impression C2C was always reasonable in whY? The mid September post by Mattg for east coast runs still looks ordinary. Any updates on east coast offerings?

That's actually a pretty common food service from VARA.

This...

Yes, it is exactly what it looks like! ingredients: Apples, oxidizer.

As someone else pointed out, aren't virgin supposed to be well and truely a full fare airline by now.

I guess they are slightly held back by the profit situation or lack of.

I think VA should follow the Delta model and for Economy X passengers on short-haul (non C2C) they could get crackers, dip & carrot/celery sticks.

MEL-BNE-CNS-BNE-MEL recently (early Oct). So all ~2hr flight times.

Departure times of the four flights were 0700/0915/1235/1600 (approx)

Snacks were
- apple bag
- biscuit
- sandwich (2/3 of a sandwich - you could see a slice of bread that one end had the top crust, the other end had no crust)
- museli bar

Really, the apple bag was good on that particular flight (travelling with two small children, perfect snack for them - supplemented by stuff we brought with us for them).

The rest was a bit hopeless and to the point they'd almost have been better not offering - the biscuit and museli bar in particular are a bit pathetic. The "buy on board" range had absolutely nothing I wanted to buy (ever). mrsdoc and I actually commented at the time the "snack" was pathetic and would be better without (and just buy something at the airport).

They'd be better off nominating "meal" flights (eg. 0600-0830, 1200-1400, 1800-2030), without buy on board option then, and only carrying buy on board for the rest of the times, and just giving out free (soft) drink service without the crummy snacks.
