Well, hopefully the food on board is good enuf.

It's fine. Without being anything remarkable. What you see is what you get (literally - they will present all the options to you on a trolley and you pick the one you like the look of). The western food is comfort food. But there will be a reasonable chinese dish.

Definitely no PJ as they are only available in F. Recently did LHR-HKG-MEL in J and was disappointed in the soft product, Hard product was reasonable but the lack of adjust-ability of the table, i.e. it did not slide back and forth just swing from side to side . I found it rather bland right the way down to the very thin paper hand towels in the J bathrooms and lack of snacks and amenities.

I felt the food on onboard was pretty good. This is based on my limited comparison with VA, SQ, AY and QF. Breakfast of dim sums got the tick from me. The highlight for me was in the lounge in HK - tried 3 of the 4 offerings in the noodle bar.

This is definitely not good enough - they can't compete with service like that. As a smallish person, a non sliding table means being perched on the edge of the seat, must be uncomfortable for very small people. I will miss the niceties such as cloth hand towels and snacks oh and a proper good menu and food. Expectations suitably lowered.

The seat itself slides back and forth (as in the whole unit) - you can move yourself closer to the table. You don't need to be perched on the edge!

There is a snack menu - order on demand.

On the occasions that I have travelled J on CX they have had no snacks available when I asked. Yes the seat slides back and forth however that means depending on your situation you may need to sit upright in order to get the tray into a comfortable position which is a pain when in a semi reclined position. Last Time I flew CX J was at Easter this year.

i dunno ansett... they have a snack menu on longer flights...at least to the USA. noodles or a burger (or something similar like pork sliders). I haven't seen those on Australia flights but with two meals in 9 hours probably not necessary.

The seats are interesting when flying with young children, I remember when my son was 3 years old and had been quietly enjoying movies from Hong Kong and on approach I'd buckled him in to his seat, only for him to suddenly appear casually by my seat about 30 seconds before landing calmly sucking his thumb, I quickly secured him in into my seatbelt with me. We go for the two windows for the kids, and the two middles for myself and wife; but realistically would be easier to all be one side.

I know the CX seats are by the same company as for Eva, but my flight in Jan was nowhere near aas comfortable on the CX flight from Syd to HK as LHR to BKK on Eva a few years ago.

Not sure if they use different padding, but the flight on Eva was one of the best sleeps I've had, bested only by SQ Suites SIN FRA.

Service on CX was extremely robotic. Was annoyed with the way they just brought out the food and didn't pay attention to how far through a course you were before pretty much plonking down the next one on the table. It truly felt like they wanted the meal service finished ASAP then disappear.

Good example of how the service offering suits (or doesn't suit) different people.

(a) there's usually 10 minutes (or more) between courses. How long does it take to eat a tiny entree? (b) meal service finished as quickly as possible means time to watch tv or sleep. I love the fact that CX can do a main meal service in 55 minutes start to finish.

a bit off topic but it is still about CX J.

1. I am a heavy snorer (when I sleep normally) and going SYD LHR, I am pretty sure I will snore if I sleep lying flat like in a normal bed, does it means I need to make the seat not so flat bed when I sleep ? just not to disturb other passengers ? when I fly Y I don't think I snore much when I am asleep. or should I just sleep flat and will someone wake me up to ask me not to snore ?

2. are the coffin class completely gone ? in Y regional I can still see the old shell seats , but the J in the same plane seems to be the new regional J seats...

you could try sleeping on your side, or stomach, that eliminates my snoring. Otherwise, if you think it might be a problem, you can advise the crew that it's ok to wake you in the event of any passenger complaints.

the coffin seats are still around on the a340s and 747s. Otherwise it's all 'new' terms of flat beds.

The Welsh-Kiwi family are heading back to Wales this Christmas flying CX in J. On the HKG-LHR leg in a 777W (1-2-1 config) I'd selected the middle 2 seats for myself and daughter (7) and a window seat for Mrs Welsh-Kiwi. If daughter needs anything during flight I'd be close by. Job done I thought.

I had to contact CX on another matter via email and in her reply she added a PS noting that she had seen my seat selection on the HKG-LHR leg and recommended daughter sits by the window with someone seated behind for ease of access during flight. Now I don't know which seats are better.

Does anyone have experience flying CX in J with a child and which seat choices are best?

Thanks
W-K

Well - you cannot see each other in the middle seats - unless you both have your seats moved forward. There is also a solid partition between the seats, so if your daughter did need something and you were sleeping, she'd need to walk the full length of the cabin, pass through the galley, and then around to your seat to wake you. A window and centre seat, or two seats one behind the other (both windows) would solve 'ease of access'.

I don't recommend the centre seats even for adult couples wanting to engage with each other during flight.

J Service on CX was extremely robotic.

you cannot blame the FAs, this is the same for Y cabin, everything including meal, drink, duty free runs are mandated for each flight and the crew have to follow exactly. and these "programs" are given to them weeks ahead, and they have to do them as per the plan....

otherwise it will be like Qatar J, you have to order everything as you wish, however some feedback suggests that because of the lack of structure everytime you ask QR J crew to get something it is like asking them a favour....

another question, going CX 138 J soon and just wondering will they be serving "supper" rather than "dinner" and will that be any different ?

you might want to google 'cx menu 138' to find out for certain, but I suspect that's a dinner flight.

supper flights are are more limited in catering... dips for entree and berries in syrup for dessert rather than the full meal service.

Across the aisle would be better. I would go all 3 of you on the same side of the aircraft. I.e. 2 windows and one aisle directly across from one of the windows.

Full blown dinner, please don't select the lamb (it's in the May menu) it was quite rubbery...but please try both the Ocean Breeze and Cathay Delight.
