Chances of HKG airport disruption from Typhoon Mangkhut?

My QF HKG->SYD flight on 16 Sep was cancelled today and it looks like all QF flights to Australia have been cancelled. QF's first offer was to rebook for 20 Sep, however being stuck in a typhoon for four days wasn't very attractive to me so I have rebooked HKG->SIN->MEL via 3K/QF.

Now I'm worried that the AY HEL->HKG leg won't proceed, but no word yet. It would probably make more sense for AY to rebook us on HEL->SIN

Will also be chasing ORC in J as my original booking was on a DSC.

AY to HKG was just cancelled. Being rerouted to SIN but a day later. Guess I get a day to explore Helsinki ... strike that, manage to squeeze on to HEL-NRT-MEL via AY/JL and get in a night earlier than my original booking FTW. I hope QF honours ORC with DSC.

So we're booked on BA32 on 17th Sep which is still listed as 'on time'. BA32 on 16th is cancelled along with just about everything else for the 16th. Fingers crossed flights on 17th aren't affected too much.....
Currently cosy on the 37th floor of Cordis Hotel, Kowloon (formally Langham). Air pressure outside started audibly increasing about 30min ago, earlier than I expected, will post further observations in the morning.

A bit off topic, but the latest typhoon for Hong Kong reminded me that 19 years ago two colleagues and I were stuck in back in 1999 with Typhoon York. From the archives of the Hong Kong Observatory;

"As York approached Hong Kong, local winds reached gale force offshore and the No. 8 NORTHWEST Gale or Storm Signal was hoisted at 3.15 a.m. on 16 September. Winds strengthened rapidly in the next few hours. The Increasing Gale or Storm Signal No. 9 was hoisted at 5.20 a.m. and the Hurricane Signal No. 10 at 6.45 a.m. This was the first time since 1983 that the No. 10 signal was hoisted. The signal was in force for 11 hours, the longest on record. York was also the second tropical cyclone necessitating the hoisting of No. 9 or higher signals in the year."

We were stuck in J.W.Marriott and can remember the notes being slipped under the door as the Signals were raised. Our idea was to ride out the storm in the bar, but that was "taken out" as one of the very large windows was blown in at the foyer near the bar and it was bound to be off limits. Lucky we were in the executive lounge, but being on the 36 floor it was swaying and one colleague could not take it and spent most of the time in the closed shopping centre below. When the eye came across the island two of us when for a short walk and it was eerie, damage everywhere, not a soul on the street, but the feeling of being in the eye quiet strange.

Well, they're at North-east Signal 8 now. The eye isn't passing all that close, but 400 flights have been cancelled over the next few days by several airlines.

And we were there in 1983. Shut in the Sheraton for 3 days.Unfortunately so was mrsdrron's jeweller of those days.

We've been at Signal No. 10 for a couple hours, surprisingly windy in downtown Kowloon, peak gusts of 194km/h at Tate's Cairn above Kowloon with139km sustained winds. We're getting a little water ingress through the aluminium structure of our hotel room window on the 37th floor but nothing that's perturbing us. Brief power blip earlier. No option but to drink champagne and wait it out....

EDIT: Apparently Tate's Cairn now sustaining 160km/hr, peak gust of 242km/hr.

We’re in the Dorsett Mong Kok and you can feel the building swaying. We’re supposed to fly out on EK383 to DXB tonight but it has been delayed to 08:55 tomorrow. We then head on to Paris but waiting on connecting flight details. Means we basically miss a day in Paris by the time we will arrive.

Thanks Scott K. Flight was delayed to 8:55am this morning. Sitting in the emirates lounge waiting to board. Honk Kong airport is very quiet this morning.

The idea of HK airport being quiet seems eerie to me!

ORC came through today. Thought 5 days was a pretty good turnaround.
