I managed to secure the much coveted 80K seat on an upcoming flight from LAX-MEL and even got it both ways. Flight is not until Aug 2013 (took advantage of sale, hence the advanced purchase) and it's an A380. I paid $25 each way for the early seat allocation. What are my chances of keeping the seat? Am I likely to get reallocated in favor of a higher status FF? I am a lowly Bronze as I only do this trip once every two years so my point always expire. I typically buy when it's pretty cheap so I doubt Qantas value me over anyone else who has no status. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

If they do move you from your seat you would be entitled to a refund of that seat selection fee.

Welcome to AFF. :D

Generally, once a seat is selected it does tend to stick.

It is even more true now they have a paid for seat selection, it is even more likely that 80K will be the seat you travel in.

Thanks serfty - and what speedy responses. Great forum.

I'm a Bronze too, and I've had no trouble keeping my seat selections for international. Only missed out on 80A due to a misconnect from another flight.

Thanks for the info. Feeling very encouraged now. I appreciate you taking the time to reassure me :)

OP states his points always expire. I presume he means his status credits expire. If his points expire this should be avoided by getting credits to post to his Qantas account from partners such as hotels, rental cars, or Woolworths Everday Rewards.

Yes I think he means his SC?

It's the points. I live in the US now so any insight on partners over here would be appreciated. I do a good amount of domestic US travel for work on various US airlines. Are any of them partners and would domestic US travel count? I'm a rookie when it comes to award programs and am likely squandering many opportunities domestically too. I'd love to find a way to keep my international miles on Qantas. And they are her miles ;)

If you fly AA you can put your Qantas FF number in the booking and earn Qantas points. Be aware though that some of the cheaper classes do not earn.

Thanks for the info straitman. That's great news. My company don't allow us to buy non refundable tickets so we never get the super cheap seats so I'm hopeful any tickets for work travel would apply and I use AA at lest 2 - 3 times a year but normally more so I should be all set.

Marriott Rewards is another way of earning QFF points - also some car hire companies are with QFF.

Basically if you can steer clear of O & Q classes then you'll be fine with AA flight numbers.

I havent had problems with seat allocations, except where the A380 gets swapped out for a 747. Happened to me a few months ago for "operational reasons".
