Changi SIN rating Best Airport is Poppycock

And that is a good thing for those of us who do get to the gate (or checkin) in the last few minutes, if everyone arrived late in the process it would be a disaster!

What I have seen some people do at SIN for whatever reason is sit outside the gate area and go through security once preboarding starts. I guess a good compromise for those who need to be early but don’t want to stand in queues or be stuck in a holding pen.
And unlike domestic (probably because wide-bodies have more space over the cabin for storage than narrow-bodies so the bins are larger?), it doesn't seem to me that there's a fight for storage ... and narrow-bodies between SIN and most Oz airports would be fairly rare (I guess a 737 would do it given Fijian were flying 737's to the USA and even if via Hawaii that's a bit of a hike from mainland USA?).

Oh, my point being that if there's no fight for storage there's no advantage to be onboard early.

Sunrise will fix all!
Maybe ... but we're delaying that by an hour, weekend after next.

There’s a lot of intra-Asia and India flights operated by 737s and a320s… so i guess there might be a reason to board early for those aircraft? SQ flies 737s to darwin and cairns from singapore.

Interestingly having just returned from a couple of Qantas 737s to Bali, there was really no issue with cabin baggage! All seemed to go away quite nicely and we left on time! But this planes had the new larger bins.

I don't cope with that very well ... same reason I'm always at the airport 2 hours too early (and yeah I'm aware that there's more risk of a wait getting to the gate from the airport drop-off than getting to the gate from already-airside). This doesn't relate to whether or not there's at-the-gate security, it's just a strong dislike for the risk of being late in general.

Like at SIN, what if you fell down one of the toilets & there wasn't time for them to fish you out before your flight?!
No diff anywhere else other than SIN?

I've not been through any other airport on the way to Europe where the toilets are holes in the ground (which I'm sure is due to the limited number of airports I've been through) ... I initially thought it was odd that there were really busy toilets & somehow I'd discovered an empty set next door, until I realised why nobody was using them ... :)

Its an Asian thing, and impractical for westerners who dont squat (and have dodgy knees). Thankfully the ones in the lounge (and onboard the aircraft) are western style.

And 2/3 of the public toilets also. And thankfully they do have the squat toilets in the public toilets, given the wide and varied nature of travellers who pass through. Some of those not familiar with standard western thrones can make an awful mess when using them, although I think that is coming less over time.

SIN has toilets where you can stand at the urinal and watch airplanes. Doesn’t help prevent making a mess for even a seasoned user.

One other thought about gate security versus centralised - CMB (Colombo, Sri Lanka) has gate security like SIN T1-T3, but they also have a terrorism risk against crowds at the airport. As a result they need security for entering the building (as is common in South Asia), thus as an originating pax you must pass through two checkpoints (not counting immigration). If CMB were to change to centralised security they might be able to avoid this (but possibly not if they still want to screen for bombs before even approaching check-in).
