Boot The Smelly Slotha Out Of Our Shiny Airport | Stuff.co.nz
Damned if they do, damned if they don't. Christchurch Airport has come under heavy fire for booting out the overnight squatters, who have freeloaded for far too long. The backlash to their "outski" edict has been operatic.

The nightly spectacle of the arrivals terminal morphing into a rag-tag gypsy camp has festered out of control, aided and abetted by myriad websites, highlighting what a soft touch Christchurch is.

Having a swarm of late-night arriving flights from Australia is an aggravating factor.

Spending a night at an airport is not something that I would do by choice. There have been a couple of times where thanks to connecting flights I haven't had much choice, but typically these where flights that arrived at a little after midnight, and I was flying out at OMG o'clock later that morning making finding a hotel a bit of a fruitless exercise. Be more time getting through customs, getting to the hotel, getting back from the hotel and going through security than I'd actually get sleeping.

It would be interesting to know how many ppl who chose to o'night at CHC airport are in a similar position, esp since they felt the need to complain about late night arrivals from AU.

Given that Christchurch's passenger numbers have been dropping by 5% each year for the past few years, I would have thought they would be doing all they could to keep their remaining passengers.

Looks like the signs I indicated were for the entire hall:
Here now.

Check in for VA71 to SYD is listed on the VA check in monitors as 3:45am. Other airport monitors show 3am, so they are incorrect.

The corral has gone, but the arrival hall is the only open public are 'till 3am when the check-in hall opens.

The area I previously mentioned (to the far left after exiting immigration) no longer has a 'corral', but there are signs up it will be closed at night (12-5am) from May 6th.

I am not sure that relates to the entire arrival hall or just the North end.

There are plenty of people sleeping around the area.
Good they relented. I have slept there about 8 times, always with a departure no later than 7am.

Airport Night-Kippers Back In From The Cold | Stuff.co.nz

Travellers will soon be able to stay overnight at Christchurch International Airport again, after it received sign-off to reopen the terminal.
The airport attracted controversy last week by closing and "clearing" its international terminal overnight while refurbishments took place.
Travellers arriving late at night were left with nowhere to stay between midnight and 3.30am.

The airport said on Sunday that it would suspend its refurbishment work from Wednesday night but when The Press visited, tourists were still being told to leave. Some were sleeping in nearby toilets and bus shelters to avoid the cold.

The Christchurch City Council signed certificates to suspend the refurbishment work yesterday, confirming that the terminal was safe.

The area would be opened as soon as possible.
Travellers flying before 8am would be allowed to stay between midnight and 3.30am
