Now Clifford, if 1C was given away checking in last you know where I would be in the ckeckin queue! ;)

And I will be with you on that ...

Further to Cliffords comments I flew tiger last week DWN -SIN-BKK
I arrived at DWN airport the flght was delayed to 2hrs boarding ok S**t happens, but then things got worse 1hr and 30 mins to check in. I stood in line for 1 hr and 30 mins. Leave Dwn 2 hrs late arrive singapore my next flight had a few hours transit you grab your bags off again in sin to recheck onto the next flight to BK another line up for around 25 mins just to check in.
Then get to the gate as the tv is flashing boarding; get their another bloody line for half hour.

Their is no electronic boarding system from what i cld see, their boarding & check in system is ice age stuff; all round far too budget for me. Even j* aren't that coughpy.

Once and once only for me.

I would say a comparison to Jetstar is somewhat unfair on the DRW_SIN leg, given that JQ_Asia's fares are twice that of tiger on the route most times! Caveat Emptor!

Mate whats with the 1940's check in system?

Caveat Emptor !! Are you a school teacher by any chance> solicitor, lawyer maybe?

So tell me how did you assess Tiger airways or any budget airline before purchase?

In 2007 would you think that any airline in the western world would have a manual check in.

Yes... if that is the most cost effective way to operate! (
Jetstar demonstrates this with its “write your own” list of names at check-in for US bound services!)

I would have to hope though, that Tiger is knowledgeable enough to have learnt that while Aussies do want cheap airfares, we expect a certain level of service…

Current LCC operators have already recognised that the travelling public in Australia is more sophisticated in their requirements than Europeans and Asians. We have a finite breaking point much higher when we come up against things like –
  • Queuing time
  • Customer Service competence
  • Fair Go
  • On-board experience
So, this generates changes like –
  • Virgin Blue offering it’s 1st generation lounges (Red Rooms)
  • Jetstar moving to allocated seating (which is a technology cost)
  • Both LCC’s creating or participating in a FF program.
ALSO, my final roar… the average Aussie is quite a bit taller than the average South East Asian, AND a 28.5” seat pitch will not hold us in the level of comfort we expect!

I assess flights based on a number of factors such as price, purpose of trip, comfort and also how long the flight is. Am I prepared to wait in long lines for check in etc, yes if I am on a leisure trip with time to spare, much like I am happy to catch a bus in preference to a taxi if I am not in a hurry.

Looking at an upcoming trip outbound 19/20 June coming back a week later I have the following choice:

Tiger $424 return including taxes
JQ - $1161 return including taxes.

Is 8 hours of lines and cramped seats worth a saving of $350 one way - its a judgement call!

Is it fair to compare both flights as if they are the same - I dont think so, the only thing they share is the fact they are both LCC's. You get what you pay for, in the case of Darwin residents flying JQ, they are in fact getting less than what they got when QF served the route at similar prices! Hence buyer beware (or Caveat Emptor).

I can't handle a 1hr 30 min check in queue and in Singapore on the way back it was 1 hr and we had to queue up twice; once to put the bags on and once to get crossed off the list!! This was the one thing I didn't expect. I have flown LCC's in Europe and Valuair and AirAsia no such problem. So even with experience on LCC's I could not see this coming.

The price I can handle, in flight service was good no probs, evening getting your bags off and on for the next flight i can handle.

But is the check in experience better in Perth with the seat selector program and such or isn't it? In Bangkok it wa 25 mins not too long much more bearable.

I have flown easyjet and valuair and airasia and not experienced any such problem of checking in. Everyone in the line was annoyed plus you imagine the families with toddlers running around. Its ok if yr an adult. No-one expected it and was prepared for it. So next time I know do you get their 2 & 1/2 hrs before the flight so you are camping at the front of check in area!!

The seats weren't too bad but a 4 1/2 flight is for me even in the middle of the night not a big worry. I did miss the headrest like on qf in economy, but i didn't expect that anyway.

The budget terminal was ok it had the req'd necessairies. Toilet, Cafe, Duty Free, ample seating, Foreign Exchange, Seven Eleven.... even the cafe/dinner in the check in hall serves up a good meal at half the price of terminal 1 & 2 so theirs a bonus!!!

If they fix this problem up I think they will be fine. As I say has anyone found the tiger perth check in better?

Waiting 1hr 30min at checkin is not limited to LCCs only.

It has happened to me on more than one occassion at SYD, ATH, BKK for cattle class checkin on Qantas, BA, Olympic, Swiss etc. I made sure that I would be one of the last to checkin so that I would not stand in the queue for too long.

Must say I've had it with Asian/Australian LCC's for now.

Just bought a QF ticket SIN-SYD-SIN for later in the year. Might be a bit more expensive (AUD 750), but non-stop, with minimal hassles. Worth the difference in my opinion, especially as Tiger has now gone to this completely stupid manual seat allocation process, where the first to check in gets the worst seats. Will pay you to check in very late!

FWIW, good old Qantas allocated me seat 33C on both legs, QF 6/5 (I'll take that). Next to the galley, where I'll be requesting another minature of the cab sav from time to time.

:)

I have flown Tiger many times from Darwin to Singapore and more. And found them to be a great budget airline, I dont give a sh.t about waiting to check in or what seat I get its only a short flight, The price is what matters to me, and getting there safely.
For me Tiger would have to the cheapest Asian airline there is leaves airasia and jetstar for dead

re the check in i thought the electronic age was going to save labour costs and make everything cheap and hassle free. i wonder if they could use one or two less girls with an electronic system if it would be cheaper?
