Checked baggage through on separate bookings

Hi all,

I've booked a QF classic rewards flight on EK traveling in F from SIN to CDG that departs at 21:00 in a few weeks time. I was unable to find any rewards seats from PER to SIN so I had to do a separate cash fare booking for this on QF in Y. This arrives into SIN at 16:45. I've got a few hours to play with in case there's any delay on this first leg to make my connection but I was wondering if, despite these being two separate bookings, it's possible to get my bag checked in at PER all the way through to CDG and not have to worry about collecting them in SIN? Please see link below - my reading of this is that if I ask at Perth for my bag to be put through onto my EK flight that this is offered by Qantas?

In case there's any reason I cannot make my EK flight I currently have a backup QF classic rewards flight with BA in J the following day from SIN to LHR. This was booked prior to 30th September and therefore falls under the free cancellation for Classic Rewards. My question is what's the latest I can cancel that without forfeiting this free cancellation - I can't imagine you can get away with, for example, cancelling it with only a few hours notice and not invoke some sort of penalty?

Finally, assuming a best case scenario and I have 3 hours to indulge in a lounge - what one would people recommend? Lounge access purely based on EK F ticket so I believe that limits me to Qantas First Class Lounge or the Emirates Lounge?

My reading is that you are correct… on separate tickets QF will through check bags for QF to EK.

You can cancel the backup flight without penalty, even close to departure. The rules have now changed, so ordinarily you’d be up for 6000 points to cancel, but not applicable to you in this case.

The EK lounge at SIN is fairly underwhelming. It’s a nice business class lounge, but we preferred the BA business offering last week over EK. EK’s champagne offering was marginally better with Moët. Didn’t like the BA offering.

Did not visit the QF F lounge, but assuming it’s a step up from the business offering it would be the pick of the bunch.

For bags - the website says black and white your bags will be connected. Some on this forum say they've had trouble even with QF to QF, but not in my experience. Should be fine.

For lounges - the EK website only specifies access to SYD & MEL QF Flounges as EK F pax (Emirates and Qantas Alliance | Our partner airlines and railways | Emirates Australia) - but the QF site implies it's for all EK F pax. So I'd say the QF page is correct.

I was there just over a month ago, it's OK. Not up there with SYD/MEL or even LAX - felt the interior was a bit dull and no view; but it was a functional lounge with the usual food & beverage options.

That‘s a handy table. I hadn’t realised the extra benefit with QF/EK. I otherwise would have said that QF would normally through check on the combo of revenue and award.

SIN QF F lounge is definitely the go. You‘ll get there before the bulk of the crowds and will be able to enjoy a nice sit down meal.

Having tried all three (although pre-COVID), I would rate the QF F Lounge as the better of the three, although it doesn't have the views of the EK Lounge, but at that time of night I suppose it wouldn't matter. The QF F Lounge can get busy with the QF2 arrival, but you should miss it.

I have a similar situation coming up and wondering if people knew the answer. Flying the following:

SEA-LAX on AA in F
LAX-SYD-BNE on QF in J

Approx 7hr layover

Both booked as QF classic awards but on seperate PNRs. Will AA check these all the way to BNE? If not can the PNRs be combined into one to allow it to happen? Would prefer this than having to hang around with the luggage for 3+ hrs before being able to check them in again with QF.

AA usually will connect the bags. Not possible to combine onto one PNR.

In summary, can we request our bags only get checked through to AMM?

You can request the short checking of your bags. 18 hours is a reasonable time as you’ll be leaving the airport for a hotel.

The rules for short checking bags can vary by airline and by airport. Some airlines will/won’t allow it (Qatar doesn’t allow it unless your ticket has a stopover included), some airports will/won’t allow it Tokyo for example has restrictions on bags being held over 12 hours.

In general an international flight connection is short… less than three hours… most airlines are unlikely to agree to short check.

Generally there are business rules associated with bags being transferred and also airport rules built into some check-in systems. I'm unaware of AMM airports rules and having bags their for 18hrs. Generally, 18hrs transit, it won't allow the bags to go through. But make sure you tell them you want them in AMM.

Hi everyone, I can report that my interlining went smoothly. I got to Perth Airport, let it be known to one of the Qantas staff there about my situation and they effortlessly issued my boarding passes for both my Qantas flight and my onwards Emirates flights and arranged for my bags to be checked through to my final destination.

I don't believe AA has through-checked on separate PNRs for some time: Separate ticketing / PNR: AA, oneworld, through baggage & protection issues > 2016 - FlyerTalk Forums.

There does seem to be an exception if one PNR is an award booking and one PNR is a revenue booking.

We've got an award flight QF79 MEL-HND connecting on BA8/462 the following morning ( ie overnight layover ) HND-LHR-BCN and was wanting to check bags through to BCN....Now there is a Qantas exception that allows for bags and boarding passes to be issued in the above circumstance but cant find any confirmation if Melbourne will indeed check our bags through to BCN....Just had an interesting interaction with Hobart what said,amongst other things, that HND is not a 24 hour airport and that the Qantas exception was last applied 6 years ago !!!....I suspect that the Agent was new and had no clues....Has anyone had experience of checking bags through in the above situation ?....We wish to remain in transit if possible....Of course we can go landside and stay at the Royal Park and recheck our bags in the morning....Thanks in advance for any help

At HND, regardless of whether it's one PNR or separate PNRs, QF cannot through-check to flights that are > 12 hours from scheduled arrival.

MEL/SIN return

Connecting time is approximately about 2.:5-3 hours. either way if flights are on time.

SIN/KUL return

I read that QF will allow check through iif one leg is an awards booking on a oneworld airline?

But on the return journey does MH also allow check through to MEL?

Yes, MH will through-check to other oneworld carriers, even on other PNRs

For flights on oneworld member airlines, Malaysia Airlines still allows passengers to check-through to a final destination with baggage even if the sectors are ticketed separately on separate bookings provided the travel begins with Malaysia Airlines.

Just an extra data point . There are exceptions to restrictions to thru check bags on one PNR only.
Last year, I flew award MEL-LAX on QF and connected onto DFW on a paid AA flight.
No problems !
