Chile and Antarctica cruise

I went out to dinner at La Poetas, a couple of km away on the edge of town, not knowing what to expect, but it was very good, and I probably should’ve prepared better.

Very close to it was a Hacienda looking place Hotel Vendimia Parador; I googled it and it came up and it looked really really good. I checked out the website and it was not hugely expensive so I walked up to the front door and with great difficulty because they had zero English, I booked a room for the two nights after tonight.

More on it later.

The Poetas specialise in seafood, and it wasn’t all that expensive in the portions were very large. 10,000 CLP is $17

I started with shrimp pilpil which turned out to be essentially garlic prawns and there was a lot of them with a delicious garlic sauce. No pic.

For mains, I had tuna Easter island style, and I asked them to suggest an accompliment and they did which was probably a mistake. The so-called accompliment overwhelmed the dish and it was probably two or three times more than I could eat. Yhat’s the tuna steak peeking out from under the eggs.

It was still light and nice and warm, and it was a very good setting.

Back to Casa Pando for the night and I settled in but had another really really bad night sleep due to bloody barking dogs all over the place, but especially across the road, right in front of my room.

Next morning, I packed and told my host that I was checking out, unfortunately because of the noise. I said I’ll be happy to pay for my entire stay if he wanted, but he only charged me for the one night.

So I packed my bags, put them in my car and then had breakfast and waited for the driver of a tour I’ve arranged of a couple of wineries to arrive.

My luck was about to turn for the better.

The next day, today, my birthday I was scheduled to go on a half day wine tour. First I parked my car at my new digs, Hotel Boutique Vendimia Parador, just out of town, within some vineyards. Hotel Vendimia Parador | Hotel en Santa Cruz, Chile

We went to two wineries about 20mins out of Santa Cruz.

The first was Montgras, Gras being the name of the owners.

Beginning - MontGras

I was the only person on my tour and the only person doing the tour and tasting here. Its a very attractive villa and surrounds, but the winery is only 30 years old and the villa 20 years!

The winery sources from 4 areas, from north of Santiago south to here.

Cellar door. Like Argentina, you generally don't rock up to a winery cellar door here to have a tasting. Generally need to be part of a tour, or sometimes you can join the tasting end of the tour.

Happy birthday! 🥳
Always good to celebrate with a winery tour and tasting.🍷 😃

Thank-you. I've just been invited to a private winery dinner with the owner of my present hotel, the Vemdimia. Don't know much about it, but sounds good!.

So here is the Vendimia, where I am staying for 2 nights

Check-in at Rydges was as tedious as check-ins are these days. Asked for a NON runway side room in the booking request, and asked for same when checking in. Up to room, which had a wonderful view of the runway. Back down, change rooms. Lovely car park view ( quiet!)

About 6pm got a text from Qantas saying my flight tomorrow is going to be delayed by 3.5 hrs, now departs 4pm. That would make my connection to Montevideo, which was 4 hrs untenable. Before i could do anything, Qantas helpfully re-booked me on SLC-Sao Paulo departing at 1:30am, arrive Sao Paulo 5:35 am (Premium Economy only), then Sao Paulo to MVD 7:15 arriving 9:55am. :(

No, thanks, so called travel agent after hours and asked for alternative. Qantas of course had taken charge of the reservation and nothing the TA could do then, but we agreed that I'd take the SCL-MVD direct flight the next day. I'd cancel one night in MVD and have it at Holiday Inn at SCL. She called Qantas next morning (aby 45 mins on hold) and this was done - only in whY, unfortunately. 1A PE to 7C in Y.

One upside is that because its now a LA flight, not QF code-share, my Latam Black (plat equiv) should get me into the good lounge at SCL.

So, after a flurry of changing reservations, printing out new itinerary, I checked in at QF First suite at SYD, no probs, then to the F Lounge and finally relaxing a bit.
