From memory you roam on China mobile.

All google services including maps. Facebook also only worked via data roaming.
 
Mogul doesn't make sense - I am not sure what carrier Telstra piggy back off but Vodafone use China Unicom - definitely no Google of any description - Facebook? Nah totally blocked on all carriers to best my knowledge - you sure you were in China?

Yes we were definitely in China.

Maybe carrier specific?

Some friends of ours were there the week before and had access to Facebook via Telstra roaming.

There was talk they were going to allow Facebook in selected areas of some cities (like in free trade zones and some specific trade zone in Shanghai). Not sure what happened to that idea.

You can take to the bank any of moondog's comments re mobile technology in mainland China.
 
Up in Harbin, at the moment I can use the mail app on my iPhone to access my Gmail accounts. All the other regularly blocked websites are still down however.
