China - never a dull moment!

Have you tried a Latina Churrascaria in Xiantindi? It’s my kinda place - Kabb also did quite good steaks there but I think it has closed also. Quite some time since I have been to XTD so best I go back again late March

Maureen have you tried Goodfellas Italian on Yanan Dong Lu? I love this place - you must book - I love this place.

Yes we love Goodfellas and take all our guests there. Kabb is closed which is a shame. It’s re opening as a casual French restaurant. Must try the Latin place.

Every bad every pax xrayed on arr PEK yesterday - just one small problem I noticed!

View attachment 158008

I often wonder if these x-rays are watched or just for deterrent value. I have taken suitcases full of wine through Guangzhou airport and Shenzhen Bay Port border crossing and never been stopped/questioned. We sometimes avoid the machines due to having young children but have been checked several times as well.

Despite thinking nobody watches the x-rays, I’m not yet ready to try a hairdryer with a scope or bowling ball with a fuse! I suspect finding out the hard way isn’t something I want to try.

Edit: did you receive any grief for taking the photo CE? They certainly aren’t keen on cameras in the immigration/customs areas.

Edit #2: now I see what you saw!! Not surprised!

No grief cause nobody past X-ray machine to see anything - and no I am not stupid enough to ever try to take anything I shouldn’t either - welcome to China - the land of ‘Complication and Contradiction!’

Had a few vacume packed steak go through the PEK x-ray without any fuss. Luckily they didn't cook to much during the transit in SIN.

For anyone travelling to China and has WeChat some reports that you might be able to add credit to WeChat Wallet.
(I've got no plans for 12 months at this point)

Outside China you dont get the Wallet icon in WeChat.
But if you go to Contacts
Search "Wallet"
Click My Wallet
Click Wallet You 0.00
Select Cards – Add Bank Card

It at least accepts my Australia issued card number (although still has the note that it's only for China Bank Card)
And suggests it will pre-auth US$0.05
Transaction processed by tenpay

I stopped at that point but worth a try if you're a regular traveller.

Wallet on WeChat with foreign CC very VERY limited value. You can buy train tix within WeChat Pay but that is about the limit:

By all means select trains to book - that is easy and works exceptionally well and with HSP train congestion as it is you need to book trains in advance.

The rest if you can get it to work you are a better man than me Gunga Din:

I'm now getting asked to upload a copy of my passport and recent photo in order to access the funds in my wallet. Luckily only 300 RMB left on there at the moment....
