Christmas 2015 Voucher Offer: Earn 5 points per $ spent (1 to 31 December 2015)

Haven't ever bought one of these before and I find the "passenger" thing confusing.

If I want to use the voucher for a flight for +1 & myself, do I have to have both of our names on the voucher?

Of course I could make separate bookings with two separate vouchers, but then will have different PNRs and may not sit together.

If I put both names on the voucher and only one wants to fly, can I still use the voucher? I presume not.

Also, what is the normal validity period?

Thanks in advance.

There are a few things to be aware of with QF vouchers.

If you have 1 name on the voucher you can only buy a single seat

If you have 2 names on the voucher you have to book 2 seats

The booking reference you get when you buy the voucher, becomes the booking reference for your flight.

QF bonuses, eg double status if booked between these dates, generally speaking your booking is the date of the voucher purchase not the date you booked the flight, so you may miss out of bonuses

If you use a partial amount of a voucher it may require a phone call to QF to get the balance reissued.

Does that mean the trick is to buy a voucher of lower value than the flight you anticipate buying? E.g. buy a $200 voucher if you think your flight is going to cost $250.

Yes, which would then require a follow-up phone call to be made to the service centre for a manual credit, of which you may experience varying levels of difficulty and success.

Unless the remaining balance is $2 or less in which case you forfeit this amount.

That's what I always do. Never have to fuss with follow-up phone calls then.

Yes, I normally buy less to avoid residual claims.

did have one a month or so back where the residual was over $1200 (yeah I had a $2k voucher from last year's promo) and took them awhile to process it.. crazy.

Decided multiple $500 vouchers, for example, is easier way to avoid the CC fees and the hassle.

does anyone know if these vouchers can be used for purchasing flights from AKL - SYD- AKL or LAX - SYD - LAX?

Saw the email this morning.

Won't be purchasing that many vouchers this year as I still have some vouchers leftover from last year. Purchased $350 voucher this morning. May purchase another 8-9 $350 vouchers.

short answer no per T&C's. only ex-AU or domestic AU bookings in AUD. (the AUD is the main issue I believe)

though at least some of us have been told it can be done manually though I have not personally done this, even though I had it offered for an AKL-MEL F booking earlier this year.

I'm a bit more reluctant to purchase vouchers this year... I've been taking advantage of the Aquire Deals pricing, which, even after paying a credit card fee, are priced lower than retail fares. I know that I can call up and have a gift voucher redeemed as an Aquire deal fare, but I don't want to have to go through the hassle of calling up, hoping that the agent knows how to get the Aquire deal, and then possibly have to beg for agent fees to be waived etc.

Considering the earn rate has been halved, I may only buy a very limited amount this year, compared to previous years.
+1. Couldn't have said it better, as discount is a handy offer.

Still haven't got my email, but also have 3 left (2 x $250 and 1 x $500) that I will book a MEL as well as SYD return flights before they expire

That's the way I do it as well RichardMEL, as $250 and $500 vouchers are handy for either return or one way discount Y, or flexible Y (and use points to upgrade to J). Happy days :D

When booking online you cant combine gift vouchers, don't know if you can over the phone

On the point of residual / balance vouchers they are supposed to be sent to your automatically by way of another voucher, but I have always had to ring for the balance

The offer is open to all.

Qantas cash is also offering 2 points per $ AUD at the moment so spend $2000 on vouchers and get an effective 14000 points plus the flight earn points (which could potentially be triple with the current offer).

Side note, as always with these things, online booking is set for Y/J only*. You can, of course, use them for ex-AU F fares (be it codeshare to NZ on EK, or QF metal/code to other locations) but you have to phone and do it. No fees should apply since you just don't have this option with the redeem voucher option on qantas.com

*EDIT: as noted below in follow ups it's only SOME flights do not have the F(where F exists) option available (or PE for that matter). eg: It can be done online for SYD-SIN (BA flight) but not for SYD-AKL (EK). Same with MEL-SIN you can book online with an F option (EK flight) so it seems to be a programming flaw that the system is not quite smart enough to know all the routes for which a QF codeshare flight with F is available. Annoying since the revenue booking pages allow it... but I digress.

You can also use a Qantas point earning credit card to pay for the vouchers as most (all?) offer a bonus point per dollar spent on Qantas all year round.

Really? I've never had issues redeeming vouchers online for F travel on EK to AKL and SIN.

Perhaps they have updated the website since I last did this earlier this year, but it only ever offered Y or J in the dropdown after selecting the city pair, eg: MEL-AKL. This may have been fixed - if so good to know! :)

edit: just tried and nope.. same deal. only Y and J in drppdown, when I select to look at J flights there was no F offered (EK codesEDhare comes up fine but only in Y or J)

EDIT EDIT (:D ) : OK, SYD-SIN and MEL-SIN give me Y/Y+/J/F options, MEL-AKL does not, SYD-AKL does not.

so it's very selective.

You can actually get amounts less than $2 credited to a new voucher. It is the service recovery vouchers that have the $2 minimum.

Of course you need to be bothered to spend the time on the phone for <$2.

Not according to the official published general terms for both gift vouchers and customer care vouchers. Does the service centre then have the discretion to override the terms and issue a residual gift voucher for amounts of $2 and less?

Was this a targeted offer? I don't recall ever seeing that offer made to me...
