Christmas Island. (AFF community report)

For those planning on spending a couple of days on the Cocos Keeling islands for snorkeling this is worth a quick scan : Cocos (Keeling) Islands - Wikipedia

I found the sign as you get off the plane, “elevation 10 feet”, a bit alarming. ☺
I remember stopping there on my first visit, on the flight back from Christmas Island, and looking out at the waves breaking and thinking they were higher than we were.

A great set of posts. I'll have to dig out my photos from when I was at Christmas Island in the early 90's. It was a great spot then. Is the Christmas Island Club still operating,?

I don’t know if the CI club is still operating, but I do remember that as a way to keep out pretty much anybody but white people, the club made the income requirement to join so high only one person could join who was not European, and that was the chief of police.

When I was there, it was pretty much anyone who could go there - there wasn't an income requirement, and there werea lot of volunteers doing it up. It was a good view, and the remains of the old Shinto Shrine up behind it was an interesting relic from when the Island was occupied during WW2

A colleague told me Fiji Airlines also flies to CI, is there any ablity to route via Fiji and therefore get flights on QFF?

5) Be prepared for flight delays / cancellations meaning you could be stranded on the islands longer than planned so have adequate travel insurance. Exmouth is also an alternative airport on the mainland for emergencies. Insurance is important for Medical Evacuations to Per as there are limited health care facilities on both islands

Wouldn't private health ambulance cover be sufficient for medical evacuations given this is part of Australia?

For the same reason, people working there used to buy Porches, Mercedes, Alfas etc to be shipped up and then shipped back to Aus at the end of their time there intending to make a profit but many once having driven them a while were reluctant to give them up.

No duty. No alcohol tax. No GST.
