Literally and figuratively.

With son moving to the UK and getting married there, in the midst of Covid, as kids are in the habit of doing, it's been three years since we celebrated Christmas with him and his family. So when they married we determined that Christmas in 18 months time it is.

And so we booked a cruise. 😂. But this one will be special, it is a Christmas Rhine cruise, from Amsterdam to Basel in December visiting some of the fabulous markets of Cologne, Strasbourg, Colmar and a visit to the BMW factory in Kiel, where MrP promptly stated, 'at least it will be warm there'. So its 8 days away according to the cruise planner. And I went all out, booked a suite, (includes laundry as there's no self laundry onboard and I'm mighty tempted to bring a couple of shirts needing to be washed from home 🤭). And the drinks package. My first time in a suite. Well, our first time I should say.

A few days in Amsterdam prior, the cruise, then two nights in Lucerne in a very swish hotel (Thankyou Viking) then Zurich to Heathrow, staying at the airport and venturing into London during the day, then a rental car up to Lincolnshire and booked an airbnb next to a pub and about five minutes drive from sons parents in law. I should say we get on with them very well. MIL was born, raised and married in South Africa and they are so similar to us. FIL is a Brit who lived in SA. DIL was born there. We were going to spend four nights with them, but they are currently hosting a Ukraine mother and daughter - who've been there 18 months now and show no signs of leaving, stressing everyone out by now as that was never the plan but that's another story.

We will spend four days over Christmas with the family who have stocked up their wine cellar in participation of our arrival. Then its drive back to Heathrow, overnight then winging our way to Dubai for New Years Eve, we are trying again to see the fireworks this time after the huge fire at The Address last time cancelled pretty much most of it. We are staying near JumeIrah Beach with views of The Khalifa and I think along the coast from Al Arab. Then a couple of days later, back to Oz. We are flying Emirates on 380 there and back, then flying to Singapore then transiting back on Qantas from Singapore. Our first flight is Tuesday night. I've packed. And, well, I've packed.

So, let it snow let it snow let it snow (but not disrupt our flights). And these flights will confirm WP for both until April 2024.

Did you tell MrP that you are conjuring lots of snow?
I keep telling him, bring realllly warm clothing, multi layers and stuff. To be honest he does have some experience - he trekked in the Himalayas and camped. But he was younger then. I think he will be fine in the snow, it's the drizzly damp cold windy UK he's a bit suss about. And then, missing out on Boxing Day with left over Christmas Ham, being hot and watching the Boxing Day test match on TV........

The frost in Manchester yesterday morning was about 2cm thick. Freezing in the shade but otherwise no too bad as no rain so far. Our NYE celebrations couldn't be further apart. Us in Oslo expected to have heavy snow, and you in Dubai! The river cruise should be great fun.

I'll be back later to update on further details. We are hoping there's not too much rain in the alps because that can flood the river and prevent vessels from sailing because they are too high to pass under the bridge. Just a few weeks ago it was low water that was causing the problem. The current flood is expected to peak tonight so our boat is leaving Basel tonight, the tricky port and Viking are well used to it.

Anyways today we are off for an early Christmas party with the Grandies who are very excited. Although four year old is a bit frustrated with his Advent Calendar started Friday. It's a Spiderman set that requires construction but he can't do that until he opens all the doors which is of course, Christmas Eve. He is just like his Daddy. I had to hide the calendar each day to make sure he didn't open them all at once. His younger brother on the other hand would always have several unopened doors. Can't blame the parents (us) then.

First thing I did this morning was check the flood warnings for the Rhine on Cruise Critic from someone living there. Heavy rains in the mountains were impacting berths in Basel, which is where our longboat was yesterday ready to make the trip down the Rhine to Amsterdam for us to board. When floods or droughts occur, there is either a bus trip 😏 or a ship swap mid cruise. Neither appeal. At all. A couple of boats in Basel were impacted over the weekend. But thankfully, flood has peaked and we are all good to go. Phew As we are going upstream from AMS we will encounter a strong surge against us.

T-36 and apparently I can check in on Emirates but as we start with Qantas domestic it seems we can't. Seats locked and loaded - I always pick window seats and the ones with seats closest to the window (J 380) and not the centre ones. Emirates flight one is overnight but on the leg to Amsterdam we should get wonderful views over the alps.

This morning is taking the cat to his boarding place. He's not happy. Going to be 34 here today and around -1 in Amsterdam.

Whoo hooo on many levels @Pushka !
Enjoy all that comes your way and look forward to your TR, am onboard and happy travels ✈️

Tomorrow we depart Adelaide to Melbourne to connect with Emirates to Dubai and then to Amsterdam. Emirates will restart direct flights from Adelaide in about 10 months so it's off to the East we go. All flights in J, and all earning status credits as they have QF codes. Weirdly we could only book Y for the flight to Melbourne - all the same PNR but put in an upgrade bid months ago, rang up and got the award upgrade sorted. This time I will laugh if we get bumped back to Y but so far there are still U seats available.

Just under 3 hours in Melbourne, not sure if we will use Qantas F lounge or Emirates. 🤷‍♀️. I do know that once seated in a lounge MrP won't be changing so it will only be one. Flight departs around 10.30pm. Dubai has an interconnect of around 2 hours, hopefully landing and departing from Concourse A.

Then it's Amsterdam for four nights, arriving in the middle of the day. Wednesday. Thursday is a do nothing day adjusting - to cold, dark and wet although BBC weather doesn't look too bad. We have a visit to Anne Frank House and an evening cruise to see the Amsterdam Christmas lights on Friday, then Rijkesmuseum and Heineken Factory tour on the Saturday.

On Sunday we depart on this 7 night trip - it's marketed as a Christmas cruise and hits many of the Christmas markets. Snow already reported by those on the cruise before ours.

We arrive into Basel and then Viking bussing an hour to Lucerne where we are staying in the Hotel Schweizerhof Luzern which is right on the Lake.

We have a walking tour of Lucerne booked for the morning and an excursion to Mt Titlus (10,000') in the afternoon. In Chamonix I experienced altitude sickness on the fast ascent so hoping that isn't repeated.

Then after two nights, off to Zurich and back to London.

Hashtag jealous
Love love love Chapel Bridge in Lucerne (thankfully still in existence since ‘93 fire!)
Olympic museum interesting too but you would already know that!!!
Enjoy

This may be of interest. Is it Summer in Dubai over Christmas?

Yep. Will work on that one! Thankyou. It’s currently 30 in Dubai and when we were there a few years ago it was warm enough to swim in the sea and pools. Freezing at nighttime. And one day it flooded with rain. Sometimes it gets foggy.

Made it to Melbourne, originally 30 minutes late but only 15 on arrival. They didn’t kick us out of business!

Pleasant meal of curry and a nice desert. No alcohol this flight for me.

I’m warming up the butter.

We were on the plane at 8pm and through to the duty free shops just 12 minutes later. Crazy fast.

We decided to go to EK lounge. It was busy but still seats. Small bite offerings here but there is a dining section. We were also advised we could go to Qantas F. 😂
