Classic reward to Tokyo late March/early April 2022?

The change fee is 5k points (iirc) but as the JAL flight costs an additional 8k each way, you'd still be due a 3k points refund if you switched to QF down the track. You would get slugged a couple of hundred in taxes for the convenience.
The points waiver for classic rewards is getting applied across all QF classic redemptions not just the QF numbers. I have been hedging my bets and have several rewards F&J flights on the trott and have been making changes (adding/removing/changing sectors or cancelling outright) to JL, QR, BA and EK and have not been charged any penalties.

@Lewdannie although @sudoer is correct when mentioning the 8k penalty for using JL over QF, this is based from SYD/MEL and only using JL. As BNE-HND is a different zone to SYD/MEL-HND, and as you maybe flying BNE-SYD(MEL)-HND you will get stung for combining QF and JL, in general these are the points rates (taxes not included):
  • QF/JL - BNE-SYD-HND - 108,400
  • QF/JL - BNE-MEL-HND - 117,600
  • QF/QF - BNE-SYD-HND - 82,000
  • QF/QF - BNE-MEL-HND - 82,000
  • QF/QF - BNE-HND - 68,400
If you take the 'bird in the hand' option then find a QF seat BNE-HND or one of the other QF/QF options the original points will be returned and you will only be charged either 68,400 or 82,000.

It can be hit and miss, cancellations have come back within 2-3 days others about a month. If changing, adding or or removing sectors (not cancelling the booking) the points change is effective as soon as the new ticket is issued as they return and deduct the points in one go.
