Coke Zero -> Coca-Cola No Sugar

"Coke Zero would be retired, after the US soft drink giant found just one in two drinkers knew the product was free of sugar."

What did people think the Zero stood for?

That is just so silly.... only reason why they would have to re-brand it would be because of peoples lack of comprehension and that they cant read the second line on Zero :p
Or its just a publicity stunt...

From the article it sounds like the taste will be slightly different, and closer to Coke

My understanding is that Diet Coke (which to my taste is slightly sweeter) was the diet formulation for New Coke (which didn't last long)
whereas the original Coke Zero was meant to taste like Coke, but was still a bit off

We were at World of Coke in Atlanta in March and the tour guy did hint that there was "changes coming" but couldnt say what. As a full strength coke drinker, I wasnt worried.

What did people think the Zero stood for?

Maybe it was the IQ of the people who couldn't work out what the Zero stood for???

Besides, does it really matter so long as sales are good?

People with IQs comfortably in positive territory have been known to ask whether Coke Zero contains caffeine.

Coke zero is extremely popular, at least in the Southern Hemisphere.

LCD (Lowest Common Denominator) thinking, and a way to distance at least one product from the “new villain” (sugar – the “new FAT”).
Now CCA will be able to save millions of dollars by not having the marketing gurus explain what the zero in the name represents.

Next thing they will tell us is that the chemical sweeteners used in it will give us artificial diabetes.

It's just a marketing ploy. They want people to be upset that they are cancelling coke zero. Suddenly because of the backlass coke zero wont be scrapped at all. Reality is this highly successful product was never going to be cancelled.

Coke Zero, Coke Light or Diet Coke are all ok names.

No Sugar does not have the same ring to it.

You would think that but I stock our boardroom mini bar with water, coke, coke zero and solo. Water and full strength coke always goes first, followed by Solo and then coke zero.

That would be super annoying, particularly if they're changing the flavour.

Coke Zero is basically the only soft drink I actually like. Pepsi Max, Diet Coke etc just not quite right.

If you give me access, I could change that situation with my preferences being Coke Zero then water and nothing else.

Except that CCA is a listed company and thus cannot mislead the market nor would make statements that could negatively affect its share price if they were not true.

Yes - it's been planned for a while, Pepsi Max has actually overtaken Coke Zero in AU and this is part of the strategy to hit back.

Important to note CCA actually doesn't own the Coke brand - they are just a bottler. Coca Cola (South Pacific here) owns the brands.

The price premium that coke charges over Pepsi is possibly part of the problem as well....

And here in Japan we also have Coke Plus in a white bottle sitting alongside Coke Zero, same product and apparently the same taste. Just a higher price for the Coke Plus.

As for home consumption, I drink what ever is cheapest at the supermarket.

People are idiots. Though I have to say I was surprised that recognition of "Zero" sugar was so low.

Anyone that will miss coke zero should swing past Coke World the next time they are in Atlanta. At the end, just before the shop, there is the room of world flavours of coke. Which is like if crack dealers started giving away their product, bunch of frenzied people running from drink dispenser to another, strung out on sugar. I'm sure zero will be found there.
