Coles gift card offers

I'm just paying with a credit card. As you say it just shows up as Coles and looks like a transaction where you only buy groceries.

There is a possibility of paying with a e-gift card purchased at ~96c on the dollar. There are many different experiences with these - but my experience is that you need an e-giftcard with a remaining balance of at least the cost of the giftcard (incl. activitaion fees) and you need to do it through a self-service checkout. It's also a pain because each giftcard needs to be authorised by the attendant.

In the past paying with e-gift cards was easier as there were many ways to buy discounted e-gift cards of large denominations at ~96c on the dollar. But now you can mostly only get $20 or $50 denominations (which is obviously no good if you are looking to buy a $100 or $250 card).

How are guys paying for the cards? Credit cards often treat a gift card as a cash advance, though to perhaps answer my own question if it says Coles how would they know?
This is definitely not a cash advance. Never has been. Ive purchased more than 50K of gift cards within the last 3 years and I've never seen a gift card purchase treated as a cash advance. So I'm not sure how you can use the word 'often'.

I was indirectly quoting a recent finder article which said gift cards were treated as a cash advance.
But thanks, good to know that is not the case.

I'd like to see that article. Please post the URL if you can.

In support of that, my purchase yesterday of cards has credited as points to my FlyBuys acct.

It does actually say may be treated as a cash advance.
I am pretty wary after learning the hard way when buying a lotto ticket on line years ago.

I wasnt expecting them to credit to Flybuys and didn't scan as I was wary of the 5 per customer limit. On reflection I missed out on points for being a cowardy-custard

All GCs at Coles except Coles and Coles-Myer GCs credit FB points and count as spend for SCs for Velocity.

Hard to imagine how the author could get this so wrong. Pretty much everything she has written is false. It's almost as if she made it all up by imagining this is how it would work, rather than basing the article on facts or experience.

Drat. You forget, live and learn. Could easily have spread across the andye family card collection
Dont panic too much. By not scanning your card you've saved yourself from the ridiculously high spend targets that you would have gotten in future weeks.

Does GCs also count towards targeted promotion such as those spend $30, get 2000 Flybuy points promotions?

Thanks.

Thanks Dr Ralph. I was at my local Coles today - no Mastercard gift cards at all, but I was a bit late in the day. A bit crazy anyway as there is a bit of panic buying, being in Melbourne.

Thanks.

Give the author a break. She does have a degree in drama! :D

Thanks.

The only way if I squint I could imagine a gift card being treated as a cash advance would be if the gift card were at Western Union or otherwise purchased directly from a financial institution in a way that made it clear it was cash-equivalent. I would never expect such treatment for a purchase at a supermarket, where the acquirer has no reliable insight into what's being purchased.

To those still looking for the Coles Gift Mastercards, keep persevering is my advice.

I've visited 15 stores in the last 4 days. With mixed success. Very surprisingly the biggest haul so far was today.
Well done to you. I went to 5 stores on lower north shore Sydney yesterday and could only find 5 $50 cards at one store. 4 stores had none at all. In fact some stores didn't even have any DJ GC cards left (there is a DJ GC offer on as well).

Thanks.

Things on Finder is hit and miss. Some articles on insurance are good.
