New.
My advice is not to purchase a gift card by itself. Make it part of other items you are buying and never show the sales staff your method of payment. If they ask tell them bluntly that its none of their concern, you are using a self check-out, not a staffed check-out.

The new machines in Melbourne stop working as soon as a gift card is swiped irrespective of whether or not you have bought other items or not.
The transaction then has to be authorised by the attendant.
The attendant at Chadstone Coles told me that they were instructed to not allow purchase of gift cards with Coles gift cards. as soon as I swiped the card the light started flasing and the operator asked me how I intended to pay.
You need either an old machine, or an attendant who does not realise that they are not meant to authorise the payment, or who simply does not care.
What error is on the screen?
It simply says you can't pay for a gift card with a gift card
I have forgotten. But it was not that message when I tried last.
The attendant was quite chatty and just told me that the message was just to alert the attendant who would ask how payment was to be made. Though maybe Coles has moved on to just be more open about it.
Bonus 2000 points when you buy some cards next week! Too bad one per household
Can anyone tell me exactly what these Coles master cards are?
They're just like the visa1 cards from woolies but without the activation fee and can be used anywhere for Mc?

No, there's a $5 fee on top of the value of the card. ie; a $50 one will cost you $55, and a $100 one will cost you $105. Not worth paying when there's no bonus on offer, but worth doing when there is.
Unlike the Only 1 Visa gift cards, the Coles Gift Mastercards have a PIN, so they're less of a hassle to use in store.
