Definitely just lucky Caversham04. I hit rolling 1,300 and gave it a go but with no success. When I made it to 1,300 in the membership year was done with no problems (and very quickly).

Similar here. I had over 1700 in January, but split between two membership years and the call centre rejected me. Finally hit 1300 for the year this week...

Ok so I've gone 760 SCs over my requal for Plat this year (please VA, lifetime something bring it one would you?). So, ready to gift SG and I think my father would enjoy that. What I need to know is now long have I got to make my decision? I thought I read possibly I have 12 months to decide? Review date is 13 July, so just a few days until the new status year for me. Thanks.

I had read the terms and conditions to be any time up to 12 months from when you hit 500 SCs more than requalifying. So should be fine to roll into your next review year, but VA call centre may be worth a buzz...

You need to do it before your requal date. I had this happen last year when I called the day after - they did it but they had to get a special approval.

That said, the year before it was no problem doing after the requal date!

YMMV but I wouldn't leave it.

Well, I've just rung the GCC and was told that the 1300SC needs to be earnt within a membership year and not in the rolling 365-day coughe. I currently have 1300SC in my rolling coughe but only 610SC in my membership year. You were very lucky then, Caversham04.

Well it appears this is the case and Caversham04 has had a win..

Been on the phone with VFF and confirm that if you reach Platinum plus 500 you cannot gift Gold. You must first be Platinum and then achieve the requal of 800 plus the 500.


They explained it to me as " a benefit of maintaining Platinum + 500 " not a benefit of achieving Platinum +500

Well I think in your case, the answer is correct. You have 12 months from your requal +500

I regard the point at which you earned the additional 500 SC as the date you " become entitled to redeem the companion "



23.3.4 A Platinum Member may nominate a Companion Gold Membership or a Companion Platinum Membership by calling the Membership Contact Centre at any time up until 12 months after the date the Platinum Member becomes entitled to redeem the Companion Gold Membership or Companion Platinum Membership.

Yes you would be correct about that - thinking on my phone call to VA, they specified April 2017 so that will no doubt be the date I hit +500 SC. I'll be nominating my father, who will enjoy the odd visit to the OOL lounge no doubt, certainly well deserved.

Secondly, I'm a bit confused on the membership yr vs accrual across 2 yrs. I'm not sure how you accrue across 2 yrs although I think I'm doing that currently.

How does the actual gifting gold process work? Can you make an account up for a person and then just gift them the card when it arrives and they can then go in and change the password??

You just give the call centre the VA number of an existing member and they will upgrade to gold and send the member a gold welcome pack.

I'll have to make enquiries to see if she's even a VA member! We haven't talked much about flying but she seems more of a QF gold girl. I remember emailing her about some flying stuff and the email I received back had a number of expletives:shock:. She found it a bit confusing.

They'll upgrade a new account no issues - she'll just need to set one up before you call and give you her number obviously!
