And free drinks, IIRC.

I have been told that QLink could have a better standard of catering without making any structural changes to the galley etc.

M

No free drinks in terms of alcohol on the 717s.

Isn’t all this talk of bogan a bit of a non-sequitur? Surely they are not unique to the Gold Coast. I could given my own pointless anecdotal evidence such as having seen street beggers in Sydney and Melbourne but not on the Gold Coast or the GC having the most expensive Uni in country but that is beside the point.

The Gold Coast has been awarded the Commonwealth Games and a big part of the bid was that we already had an international airport where Hambantota did not. While its not the greatest airport, a cough airport beats no airport. The games will attract visitors from various levels of socio-economic status, including the athletes themselves. As such I would expect investments to made into the airport itself and number of addition (LLC and Full service) airlines to take an interest in OOL. I would assume that elite athletes would occupy the pointy end of the plane and would not be interested in LLCs. Under the current situation that could be a bit problematic while I suppose those travelling from the east (of GC) could take Air New Zealand, I would not expect athletes traveling from the west (of GC) to be happy to take Air Asia X to OOL. So I would expect a number of international full service airlines to take a interest in OOL, even if it just for temporary stint during the games.

Now QANTAS is in an interesting position as they were sponsors/official airline for the Melbourne 2006 game. Do they want to be the official airline again, when the games are on in a city that they don’t currently service and while Virgin has just rebranded to a more premium Virgin Australia and putting a lounge in OOL. I would like to see QANTAS come back but guess I have to wait and see.

If Qantas is a sponsor I would think athletes will be flying direct into SYD/MEL and then domestic QF up to OOL. They wouldn't fly LCC just because they fly direct intly.

Maybe VA will be a sponsor instead, or maybe even JQ - the Commonwealth Games doesn't have the reputation as a top-shelf sporting event (especially given the city OOL beat was somewhere no-one had ever heard of) so doesn't need a top-shelf airline to sponsor it.

This does seem to be awfully early planning for something that is over 6 years away - surely QF could do this all within a year?

Admittedly it's now 18 months ago, but ISTR a gratis bevvy run on an early evening BME-PER 717 service. Maybe that's a west coast thing?

Last 717 service I got was CNS-DRW late last year and it was pay to drink, form memory slightly higher than QF by $1 a drink as well.

On my QFLink flights to LRE last year they were serving drinks for no charge.

All afternoon weekday Q-link flights have had free drinks that I have been on. The two week end ones were in the morning so didn't get alcohol.

In fact, when I think about it, can you get the full complement of juices / soft drinks at QantasLink? Or is it just tea, coffee and water?

Nope they have soft drinks, juices etc (well at least the Q400's do).

The Dash 8s (200, 300 & 400) on the east coast have free drinks after 4-00PM (at least on those routes which DJ also flies). White & red wine offered; beer available if you ask. Plus soft drinks, tea & coffee of course.

On Qlink MEL-DPO the later flights have first-snack packs. Then the FA comes along with a bottle of white and a bottle of red. Then coffee, then tea, then a rerun of the wine.Anything else you have to ask for.But on morning flights I have asked for Bundy ginger beer and received it.

Recently caught up with a good friend of mine who's a Qantas Captain. He said there's a lot of talk of Qantas's return to Gold Coast because Virgin is absolutely destroying the business market.

with a little bit of help from JQ

Would love to see this happen, especially if there was a nice re-launch sale to coincide, though presume flights would only be to SYD/MEL :(

I hope this is true. The only reason I don't go to the Gold Coast is because QF don't fly there.

Seriously? This has to be one of the more crazier comments I have ever heard. Dismissing a destination because a particular airline doesn't fly there. Geeze if this is also how you decide where to fly internationally you don't give yourself many options these days with the Qantas INT network! Even more so that you also state in your avatar that you are DJ Silver, you know Virgin fly to the Gold Coast?

Oh see I would rather go somewhere like Cairns with QF than The Gold Coast with DJ. I was matched to DJ silver, flew enough to retain silver to give them enough of a chance to see if I would like to fly with them. I was unimpressed with DJ in general. So I'm not going to go somewhere that QF doesn't fly to because I don't like DJ. Don't even start me on JQ.

Don't assume that I'd only be interested in flying QF - for me, they're the only viable option domestically. I fly Oneworld airlines outside QF destinations overseas.

I actually fly to BNE instead of OOL for the same reason. I loath both JQ and DJ. We hire an Audi A6 and drive down to the Gold Coast or Byron.

That’s a long drive to Byron… from the Coast alone, let alone BNE!

It is not that long with the highway, grasshopper. I did Byron to BNE last year at Easter and it was almost the same to get from Byron to the highway as it did from there to the hyperdome.
