Re: [Confirmed] QF removing [cheap] ASAs [from web booking engine Jun 26-was]10April

Although not earning SC's or FF points, would you say that upgrades from a cheap sale ticket is also taking profit away from Qantas...? Should these therefore be "enhanced" also since the points cost + ticket cost is significantly lower than a J ticket...?

Don't give them any more bright ideas :!: :p
The Y-J and J-F upgrades along with the OW awards are the few remaining perks for the QFF who actually fly with their points ;)

PF, not even qantas could be that stupid... could they?

They did ground the fleet so I guess anything is possible...

Re: [Confirmed] QF removing [cheap] ASAs [from web booking engine Jun 26-was]10April

Let's not be silly here. People on AFF are not silly. There is no way they would actually "pay" in QFF points what an airfare is actually worth. Are they?

On the flip side, there are a lot of ordinary frequent flyers who will gladly "pay" in points above and beyond what a redemption is actually worth. Let me see, gift cards, gift items, wrist watches, movie tickets, hotel nights, magazine subscriptions and so on. These guys are extremely rare on AFF and these are the guys Qantas loves to take care off; they probably take them out on a bus, drives them to the farm and 'milks' every point out of them.

To get people to "pay" for airfares.

And yes I know what most are saying that QFF points is the same as paying. No it is not.

The 48,000 QFF points people earned by paying the ATO is probably ~$240 income for Qantas. I would be surprised if Qantas is selling a QFF point for more than 0.5c/QFF point in bulk. Now for that ~$240 income + ~$65 in taxes people are purchasing airfares that retail well over $1,000.

Does a PER-SYD business class airfare cost ~$1,600 one way? If QFF points are really valued at 1c/QFF point who here is going to use ~160,000 QFF points for a one way PER-SYD in business? What is the Any Seat award currently cost? How many SCs and points are earned from that Any Seat award? Then tell me how Qantas is making a profit from Any Seat awards?

I think you mean "pay directly", because using QFF points is paying.. albeit in an indirect manner...

I don't know what QFF charges other companies for the actual point itself, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were some other "service" fees charged to said business. eg. the ability (or "right") to offer QFF points, ability to market certain specials, bonuses or penalties for exceeding/dropping below certain thresholds of points activity per time unit (month, quarter).

For all we know, QFF might even charge QFd (or QFi) when someone makes a redemption ("purchase") for tickets.. kinda in the way that "points" are like using a "credit card".. where QFF is the "bank", QF is the "merchant" and the customer is the customer. I could be wrong about that part though.

Even in bulk, QFF get around a cent per point and at that level you are talking 100s of millions of points - more with smaller entities where a million points may cost from $20,000 + GST.

So that 48,000 would garner $500+.

Looks like Virgin is upping the stakes.
Virgin chases Qantas frequent flyers

Interesting paragraph:

Qantas' most recent figures showed a rise of almost 8 per cent in redemption rates for its loyalty scheme in March, compared with the same month in 2012.

Surely this wasn't the reason for the instigation of MASA's. to be an increase in redemptions increases the revenue (through the purchase of points) and a reduction in the liabilities...

There's a fare basis code for a OW award (UBPASROW I think), classic (can't remember ;)) and ASA (you got that one) that all book under U award inventory (the only bit that matters in reality).

A Classic Award FB is simply UBP.

If the MASA's end up being discontinued then people can travel on QF but do so via AA's AAdvantage ff program as the taxes are a fraction of QF Classic Award taxes.

The good thing is that anyone can buy points on AA so makes starting from scratch easy. AA will give you updates when there are special bonus points offers.

Only 'Gotcha' on that one is it's once per year than you can purchase miles. Typically the best offers (30% bonus etc) are early in the year (as All AAdvantage members run Jan thru Dec).

Not only are the taxes & surcharges are a fraction, and the points required are also substantially less in some cases.

Availability on QF may be slightly better for QF elites, but AA FFs can still ticket QF seats in U and P with some consistency. Earning AA miles in Australia from credit card spend isn't too hard, but you lose many of the bonuses you get on direct earn cards domestically.

Re: [Confirmed] QF removing [cheap] ASAs [from web booking engine Jun 26-was]10April

I hear SQs SIN-LAX and SIN-EWR flights are about to be phased out ?
Or is that just on the A340-500 all J aircraft ?

The all J SIN-EWR finishes this year, which I think then hands the title for longest commercial flight to QF. SYD-DFW I think, but I am happy to be corrected.

You are correct, the 18 hour epic on SQ was on my bucket list

Correct, only the all business class A345 direct flights are ending because SQ is getting rid of those aircraft from the fleet (less profitable or something?). Given those J seats are fully flat, I have found it very easy to sleep for hours and hours on those sectors in the past. My only complaint is no First Class.

Other SQ services (388s) to LAX and JFK (and other US destinations) are continuing into the future.

Unless one purchases dividend miles.........and they get moved across at 1:1 ;)

Only if you have an animal and most of my QFF mates don't.

Well there are a few people who I'm acquainted with who although are not strictly animals could possibly be classified as pets.

what cards earn AA miles in Australia? I earn around 70k QFF points a month on credit card spend, so it might be worth my while to target AA miles instead of QFF points.

The best are both Diners and Amex via SPG.When you move 20000 SPG points to AA you get a 5000 bonus.
This is how I got to LTP from LTG gold in ~ 18 months.Unfortunately CC points no longer count for life time status.

Like Ryan Bingham though, that's all very Up In The Air at the moment ;)

If they are, I better buy up. Now. :)
