re: Possible US Air-AA Merger - likely to be run by US Mgt, remain as AA & stay oneworld

This might be a very bad thing for QFF'ers.... considering US Airways is part of *A... and if they run the show...

I believe there will be a merger - but after AA exits CH11 protection, whereupon they would be in a situation to be able to take over US, rather than way porported in the linked article.

Not necessarily. Switching to OW may be advantageous for US so they not competing with UA for star alliance traffic. Looking into the future, who knows, it may make a lot of sense for QF to run 7/8 to PHX instead of DFW, and cut out the BNE stop on the way home, after all PHX-SYD is less than LAX-MEL [have no idea if PHX is too high or hot though].

That's a good point, considering AA is the only OW airline in NA.

The NDAs in place with the ad hoc creditors committee for AMR expire Feb 15, most of the other NDAs expire tonight but its expected they will be extended to align with the Feb 15 deadline, I expect it to be announced if at all in the next two weeks inline with the coverage of those NDAs.

Actually, quite a significant proportion of QF8 passengers actually get off in BNE. Many others connect to MEL, PER, CBR and other ports from BNE.

Not every QF flight needs to start and end in SYD !!!!

That's what I was thinking - USDM to buy cheap tickets on oneworld and use my WP status. Yay!

re: Possible US Air-AA Merger - likely to be run by US Mgt, remain as AA & stay oneworld

First US management has said a merged entity would still be called American airlines and be part of Oneworld.
Second anyone actually involved in the bankruptcy preceedings faces stiff penalties if they leak any details.

So everything is still speculation.

re: Possible US Air-AA Merger - likely to be run by US Mgt, remain as AA & stay oneworld

I thought there was some sort of issue with US bringing AA to *A anyway? As far as competition goes, they'd want US to join OW, and not the other way around, sort of like LATAM?

Edit: Because they already have SkyTeam and *A covered, so leaving OW and having two major airline groups in *A wouldn't be preferable. But having one in each camp...

Oh- that's a very positive way of seeing this! I, grumpy half-empty German-born me, of course would rather expect any of these two scenarios: Either the new merged airline joins *A and here goes the last OW airline in North America OR it stays/moves into OW and the great Dividend Mile bonus offers are over and done with. Let's hope that the glass is fuller than I think!

re: Possible US Air-AA Merger - likely to be run by US Mgt, remain as AA & stay oneworld

Have been doing a bit more searching.Basically all the speculation re the merger going through very soon comes from the AMR bondholders. This group includes US airways who bought discounted bonds when AA announced the bankruptcy. So it maybe just more PR from US.
But Doug Parker has offered the bondholders a better deal than that if AA exits bankruptcy pre merger. He obviously is a very good tactician. This probably makes it more likely that the merger will go ahead on US terms.
Big problem i can see.US is offering everyone more money than AA.They will have to make that up from somewhere. The forecast savings from the merger like all other mergers will probably be less than forecast.so money has to be saved elsewhere.Unfortunately it could very well be less awards, higher fees and no USDM like sales.

Re: AA's future

Well it looks like there is a date for an announcement about the merger.

DALLAS - A merger between American Airlines and US Airways will likely be announced next week, sources tell News 8.

Let the speculation begin.

Re: AA's future

The AA brand certainly won't be disappearing - as a brand name, it is far more vaulable than "US Airways".

And without doubt, any merged operation would continue to be branded as AA and remain within oneworld, so I can't see any cause for concern at all.

AMR-US Airways Near Merger Agreement - WSJ.com

...The people cautioned the merger negotiations remained fluid and could fall apart. American has resisted a deal at various points in favor of emerging from bankruptcy protection as an independent airline. Significant points of the deal, including how to split ownership of the airline and how to arrange board seats and management ranks, remain unresolved. The boards of both airlines haven't yet convened to consider the deal, although American representatives on Wednesday discussed whether to schedule such a meeting, said a person close to the matter.

Couldn't agree more, although being in CBR, it does mean a flight to an Int port no matter what.

AA have just done a big re-branding. Doubt they would have gone to that expense knowing it'll be scrapped in a year or two. AA also have a pretty tight-knit deal within OW. They are a pretty major player within OW and thanks to their position in the alphabet, they tend to always come first or second in any lists.

US on the otherhand being in *A would simply position AA/US merger against UA if they went down that path.

Re: AA's future

There are as usual conflicting reports. Many suggest that the merger will be announced Tuesday in Dallas(tomorrow morning our time).Other reports though suggest it has been put off.We will see it when we see it.
