Connecting with QF in HKG from China ... a bit dicey? Advice?

Hi all. I have a Qantas ticket from XIY-BNE next month in J. All flights are in one single itinerary:

KA943 XIY-HKG: 15:50-19:00
connecting to
QF98 HKG-BNE: 20:00-06:45

There's an hour to connect which, theoretically, is all fine but I know from experience that flights from China and this flight in particularly can depart quite late. Also, I know Chinese airports can be dodgy about issuing boarding passes for subsequent flights from other countries.

My question is, in the likely event I miss my connection what is the best procedure to get re-booked ASAP (I've only a five night home in BNE before my next trip.) It's a Qantas ticket but first flight is KA flight number and there'll be many more Cathay reps at the airport, I assume ...

Advice gratefully received :)

Are both flights on the one itinerary, or separate bookings?

Both on the same itinerary. On the outbound flight I was routed via PVG and MU but all on QF flight numbers.

On this return flight, for timing reasons I suppose, it's via HKG but no codeshare on KA.

I presume the ticket is issue by QF so you'll likely need to approach their transfer desk at HKG, when you misconnect it will likely come down to availability of seats on the later flights as to whether or not you will be reaccomodated on QF (or possibly CX) or you have to overnight at HKG.

Thanks for that. Yes I was wondering if they would be willing to put me on CX ...

Only direct CX flight is midday following day.

Most likely reroute would be the 2135 QF118 to SYD arriving 1000 and then a domestic connection I'd say.

Yes, they'll put you on CX if they need to. They'll look at QF options first, then JQ, then partners (oneworld or other).

JQ...
What are the compensation implications for them putting someone on an inferior product?
Also SC earn implications for JQ too

The faulting carrier, in this case KA, is the one responsible for rerouting you. There's a good chance KA would just book you onto CX.

JQ doesn't fly from HKG to Australia, and I really doubt they'd route you on 3K to SIN and then JQ you from there ......

Thankfully not, and hopefully we never see The Orange Cancer flying between Australia and HK

I don't like to leave 60 minutes between any connection in any airport regardless of what MCT is for that airport and even if protected unless I didn't care about spending an extra night in transit.

In HKG I find 2 hours is OK but happier with 3 hours. I have a trip coming up in June BKK-HKG-SYD on EK and QF on separate tickets and think I have 2-3 hours between flights. Happy with that and I'm confident if something went wrong I'd be looked after.

Funny, have just been thinking about this as I'm due to make this dicey connection tomorrow. The first leg, KA943, was delayed 90 mins or so today so I definitely wouldn't have made my QF98 connection. Just hope in the event it happens that they can move me on to QF118 and I go via Syd (and that they still have J availability...) Flying in China is just so unpredictable!

Fingers crossed!

In all likelihood you'll get put on CX161/CX101 then QF to BNE. It's up to CX/KA to reroute you so they generally put you on their own metal.

Just don't do what I did many years ago. KA from mainland to CX101 (last flight out for the day) with a 1.5 hour layover. Missed the conx due to 3+ hour late inbound and got dumped in the terminal overnight instead of getting pitched up in a hotel, despite repeatedly asking.

Oh really? I thought they'd have put me on QF. I wonder what the implications are for S/C earn in that case. Much less with CX and wonder if I could make a case to Qantas to have the SCs for the original route credited (they'll get me to WP.)

How did they fail to put you in a hotel?! I thought that was their obligation ...

If you somehow get credited the SCs from the missed conx (and they're lower than what you'd originally have gotten) then you can ring up QFF and ask for the original routing points/credits.

The explanation we got at the time was that it was an ATC delay so they were under no obligation to provide any compensation.. something like that? Either way it was a lesson to never book the last flight out again.

It's all so unpredictable.

In any case, have been monitoring today's flights out of Xi'an and, so far, everything's departing on schedule including the morning MU to HKG. Here's hoping ...

If you do get delayed and put on CX, ask QF for ORC (Original Routing Credit).

I hope you are HLO because there is no chance that any checked luagguage would make a one-hour connection in HKG in my experience. Even on two-hour connections my checked luaggage never makes it through HKG, so now I am also leaving 3+ hours for connections there if possible.
