Coronavirus (COVID-19) Respiratory illness - Effect on Travel

Absolutely not being blase, but some comments/actions around the place are way over the top.

This has already been pointed out today by health ministers in 2 states of Australia in interviews. Just one example there are no existing cases in SA but there are on the ground reports all stocks of masks and hand sanitiser have been exhausted and people walking around with masks on.
I was in the central market today and near China Town and didn’t see any masks.

If things have turned pair shape within the 14 days I suspect many will be thinking - why did they bring them here....

Apparently the WHO is against anyone being airlifted / relocated / moved from the affected area, maybe the Gov should abort the plan and let the Chinese handle it.

The WHO has played politics over this and kowtowed to the CCP rather than looking at the global interest - look at their petty refusal to have any discussion with Taiwan about the response even though Taiwan is closer to the epicentre than most other places.

This is not good

Further into the article it said the Chinese Government refused to give clearance for the UK charter flight to depart today.

QS, correct.

WHO stated last night that travel restrictions were not necessary yet.
But for many LMICs, it probably is one of the most effective tools in stemming this outbreak.
It now is in India and the Phillipines.

But what exactly will travel restrictions mean once it presumably becomes world wide anyway?

Nothing. They serve no protective purpose.
But currently it is not global yet.
Africa is the worry.

With a critical mass already achieved, it seems a pandemic is now inevitable.
We are lucky that it seems pretty benign and with a bit of luck will just become another annoying bug we have to live with.
I guess mutation is the issue looking forward.

If 20% of every worker worldwide become ill in the next few months… what does that do for global gdp..
Who will milk the cows , bake the bread , pick the fruit or drive the delivery trucks ?
Who will deliver the pizza's ?
What is it currently doing for China's production of tv's and smartphones.. will jb have anything to sell ?
Will we soon have the worlds largest stockpile of coal that no one wants ?

The grass is not always greener!

USA Gov is charging US$1,000 for a seat on their plane, another article suggest there will be additional cost charged once they land in the USA..... A$1,000 for an all inclusive package is a pretty good deal. Article indicates the EU will also be charging.

From the look of the graphs on JHU site, it appears the work being done by the various authorities is slowing the overall growth rate, and the ratio of recoveries to deaths is, as expected, changing rapidly as the days go by.

I think post #360 by @Quickstatus is a good indication of what to expect and hopefully with the actions being taken maybe even the timeline more compressed.

So I read that United, AA , BA and many others have cancelled flights to mainland China. I assume an airline decision and not Govt one.
I therefore assume that QANTAS is too greedy and money hungry to make this type of decision ??
I also must assume they value profit ahead of the health and welfare of Australian citizens ????
All assumptions but no other conclusion really

Where do they fly now? I thought they were getting out of Shanghai, so does that just leave Peking?

They still fly to Beijing but it was scheduled to end in March anyway.
Qantas has signalled that they may bring that date forward.

Or perhaps, the other airlines have seen a huge drop in bookings, and have had lots of people take them up on cancellation waivers, and have taken the pragmatic commercial decision to suspend flights?

QF is a commercial entity - it is not their decision to stop people entering Australia from China - that is a federal government responsibility. With the huge foreign student population in Australia - and the beginning of the university teaching year imminent - l most flights from Asia to Australia are very full at this time of the year. And this group are unlikely to cancel travel unless forced to. This is distinct from the northern hemisphere travel at this time of the year.

They still fly SYD-PVG. They are getting out of PEK.

Or they consider it unnecessary at this stage. They'd probably save money in the short term by cancelling.

Of course there is. You don't like them, and feel the need to throw some mud.

Has the Australian government banned Chinese airlines from flying here. As they constitute the vast majority of flights from China to Australia, until they do, then any action by QF is simply tokenism.
