Coronavirus (COVID-19) Respiratory illness - Effect on Travel

So just an innocent mistake or the Chinese covering their tracks?
Very scary if it’s legitimate

You can understand why Governments would want to avoid mass panic. Makes the world's reaction to this thing (closed borders / quarantining/ etc) more relatable IMHO.

That's 10 out of the 31 tests that came back first. Still waiting on the other 242 test results, and they've only tested people showing symptoms and those close to them.

10 more positives out of the next 71 tests.

At least they have been confined to cabins. Hard to see how this whole ship doesn't get the virus.

Which then leads to the question - how on earth do you treat this many people with quality healthcare while not risking spread to the rest of the population in Japan?

Given that Japan had something like a million visitors from mainland China in January and many of them are still there, I reckon there's still a lot more to be revealed...

🤔. This contagion needs to be sorted well before August or this year will go down in history as big as 1936 and 1972 etc (Olympics)

This is just another of your <redacted> goes at the ABC. Was 30 metres not far away from two people wearing masks for you. Just start a thread of My Thoughts on the ABC.

Did anyone hear the intrepid ABC reporter on Christmas Island, on AM this morning? She hiked to the detention centre fence, to interview someone they have been following. I came in a bit late and could just hear the lady saying that 'you just deal with it', but the reporter was concerned the lady's son wasn't going to have a party for his birthday. Then the piece turned serious. The reporter described her own problems, such as having to hike about 15 mins to the fence, than then drive back to town, avoiding ... get this ... potholes :eek:and migrating crabs!

Then we heard from an islander that he wasn't concerned about having the people in the camp ("its not that they have the virus - its just isolation" and then, to hear the other side, a lady who - gasp! - who had heard a story from someone in Perth that someone had moved away from someone in a queue who said they came from Christmas Island! This apparently was worth broadcasting.

Fair dinkum, the whole piece should have been cut and an interview with a doctor giving us some info on, I dunno ... progress on a vaccine, or maybe just their golf handicap would have been more relevant.

I heard this and couldn’t understand. The public can drive right up to the detention centre car park! The only way it could be a 15min walk is if the government has deliberately blocked the road. As for dodging crabs, that’s half the fun!

Even with norovirus, not everyone on a cruiseship catches the norovirus.
No one is saying the N-COV will spread to the rest of the population. WHO, national and local measures are in place to mitigate against that

Right, but say roughly 20% on board the ship test positive for the virus and roughly 50-60% of those require intensive medical treatment (scans, oxygen) how is that delivered effectively without creating a scenario where the virus continues to spread.

I’m not sure that even this many people need this intensive care. Maybe they are just being sent to hospitals to isolate them?

Not sure where you got those numbers from. Sounds speculative.

You can drive up to the car park, but if you wish to access the fence, there is a walk - the fence is NOT at the car park.

Sadly, those crabs on the road are a shadow of their former self before the fire ants killed them en masse.

We were able to drive up to the card park 3 years ago....interestingly the detention centre was not on google maps or on our Xmas Island tourist map....we knew it was in the NW corner of the island so it wan't too hard to find!DSC08647.JPG

Yep, you can still drive up to the carpark. But, to speak to someone 30 meters across the fence, as the reported did, you need to walk about 15 mins to the fence. You can't drive up to the fence.

Here's the detention camp : Australia's Christmas Island - Google My Maps

My work have just grounded ALL international travel :-(

Are you working at Hypochondriac Pty Ltd! :p

Seriously, is it because of the insurer or a rather excessive sense of duty of care from your employer?

My work have just grounded ALL international travel :-(

Are the countries likely to involve work travel all in Asia, or would it include Canada, NZ etc?

I'm also now the proud owner of 1 litre of hand sanitiser. Hopefully enough for 5 weeks on-the-road air! Good supplies of sanitising wipes, as well
