Coronavirus (COVID-19) Respiratory illness - Effect on Travel

My friend that lives in Washington State said their school district is shutting down for 14 days with online learning to begin on Monday

... but doesn’t mention Malta. I’m flying there tomorrow from Istanbul ( TK). Got an email 3 days so listing 6 countries which if I’ve visited recently, I can’t fly.
No, I’ve seen a few restrictions mentioned but not in Timatic. Was hoping they were just a little slow in updating. Or perhaps Malta hasn’t notified IATA

Firstly there are gaps in Australia's plans.A lot of regional Australia is not prepared. One hospital was told to expect 2 Covid positive patients as they were virtually recovered and their beds were needed. They would still need a negative pressure isolation room. The hospital only had one. even though warned by this action when a possible Covid patient turned up a few days later the ED staff wanted immediate admission as they didn't have enough staff to deal with it-they had more staff than the ward.Obviously no plan was in place.

Good point! Maybe I should have said ‘relatively exemplary’. Where I am now there are people with temperature guns at the airport, but that’s all the preparedness I’m aware of. Announcement on Monday that “we haven’t found anything’, but questionable capability to look. Hospitals are mostly private and most people can’t afford a doctor. If you want decent medical treatment you go to Dubai or Ethiopia, and the flights to those places are full of the walking wounded. If it does hit, that’s what really sick people would hope to do - try and fly to Dubai or Addis. I’m hoping they now have test kits but the samples would need to be sent away, probably to one of those places. And no test till someone turns up at a hospital that has a kit.

Looking forward to returning to unprepared rural Australia in a couple of weeks and missing out on tortured mideast politics for a while 😀

Dusting off the camping gear here. Thinking about going bush for winter and set up camp somewhere quiet above the tropic of capricorn. Final decision pending situation at end of March...and whether all the dunny paper fits in the trailer... If not, ditch the clothes and going commando😷😁
Oops wrong thread sorry

Dunny paper shouldn't be an issue - plenty of wide leaves up here :p It's like the opposite of that disaster movie "the day after tomorrow" - it's too late for the people of the south

Three ambulances went out to the MEL international terminal and came back with 'pax'. The paramedics I could see were wearing disposable overalls.

Did the ambos tackle this airport event better the coppers effort back in 2017?

I don't understand the question.
I expect it's a reference to this event:

POLICE were forced in to a last-second change when storming the Malaysia Airlines plane at the centre of a bomb scare after the stairs they were using were too short.

The latest revelation comes amid growing criticism of the police handling of the Melbourne Airport incident last week.

Interesting article in the Atlantic about deficiencies in testing in the US.
The Atlantic - Evidence that US is botching coronavirus tests

Here's another about the situation in Egypt, which was apparently forced to admit to local cases after 12 crew members on one cruise vessel tested positive.
The article notes that the number of returnees testing positive after returning from Egypt has now risen to 26.
NYT - On Nile Cruiser, 12 Crew Test Positive for Virus, and Egypt Fears Broader Outbreak

Finally, Berliner Morgenpost has a good map of the outbreak by country and german state - although the data appears to get less current the further you get away from germany

Does anyone know if once can purchase regular medical insurance( for residents ) in the US for cover against corona virus and other illnesses ? Is it expensive ?

What's the problem with no shows anyway?

Most of the time keep the money and not spend cash on the fuel to get them where they need to go.

Forward bookings need to keep coming at a steady rate though...

Paywalled. What is it saying?

International airlines are reporting “no shows” by 50 per cent of passengers ....

IATA has revealed the extent, with one airline reporting a 108 per cent fall in bookings to Italy ...

Another had experienced a 26 per cent reduction ... compared to last year ...

IATA has called for aviation regulators to suspend rules governing airport slots immediately...

The rules for slot allocation means airlines must generally operate at least 80 per cent of their allocated slots otherwise the airline loses its right to the slot the next season.

“In exceptional circumstances, regulators can relax this requirement,” said the IATA statement.

" even countries without major outbreaks of COVID-19 were experiencing decreases in air traffic."

“There are precedents for previous suspension of the slot use rules and we believe the circumstances again calls for a suspension to be granted,”

Greta Thunberg is probably happy though . Perhaps covid19 will save us all from irreversible climate change?

It is certainly making an impact.
On a global scale, COVID-19 has reduced greenhouse carbon emissions by 100MtCO2 at 25/2/20. It will be an even greater reduction by now. The China manufacturing shutdown alone has made a significant impact.
