Coronavirus (COVID-19) Respiratory illness - Effect on Travel

There's been plenty of discussion about staying home when sick. It seems to me that doc should have followed that advice and just stayed home...

The other thing about this sorry tale, the bug must be pretty rampant in the USA.

There were 150000 test kits available from the CDC from Feb 4th.That day they authorised public health laboratoties to develop their own kits as initially a problem with the CDC kits.150000 kits means 75000 people could be tested.testing initially was,as it should be,done on symptomatic patients and contacts.
On 29th Feb the CDC authorised private labs to develop their own kits and it is estimated that there will be over a million test kits available this coming week.

With all due respect the NYT have a different agenda creating anxiety with a political bias.

Here is one counties response in Nevada-another drive through centre.
"Albee said if someone is contacted by the county health district’s outbreak response team or calls to get tested, they must undergo a risk assessment. They are then assigned an identifier number and are given directions to the staging area for testing.

Anyone who is being tested must remain in their vehicles. Albee said nurses are geared up and ready to obtain any samples from patients in their cars. The patient then leaves.
In that way, we hopefully limited the amount of exposure to not only health care workers, but also people so that we don’t have contamination going on in emergency rooms and to health care workers,” Albee said. "

Do you want fries with that.....

Symptoms can be quite mild as we have heard and the doctor has made a statement. If people are just going on the health minister’s comments it’s only fair to hear what the doctor had to say:

In his reply on Facebook, Dr Higgins said Ms Mikakos's version of events did not match what he had told her department.

"I had a mild cold when I returned from the USA last Saturday morning, which had almost resolved itself by Monday morning, hence my decision to return to work," he said.

"I hesitated to do a swab because I did not fulfil your criteria for testing but did one anyway on Thursday evening for sake of completeness, not imagining for one moment it would turn out to be positive.

"I believe you have taken a cheap opportunity for political grandstanding and would appreciate an apology."

Mrs C, employed by a multinational logistics and B2G organisation, says the company has banned ALL international and domestic travel (air and rail) globally.
Looks like we'll need to burn 120k QFF points in a couple of months.
That sounds like a very sensible policy, although a couple of months might be a tad optimistic.

Unfortunate call for Dr Higgins. he made a call and it was the wrong one. He had no fever and cold symptoms, he said, and I read elsewhere that about 89% of COVID-19 cases with symptoms have fever.

Not sure how practicable it would be to test everyone with such vague symptoms.

Agree but he had recently returned from overseas. Had experienced respiratory symptoms. That's obviously a flag Had he not travelled overseas then I think his case would be much stronger.

So, 16 million people in Italy are in the red zone and are in lockdown. They gave two hours notice in the middle of the night and a lot of people escaped. Presumably, if they had the virus they took with them. 😢

Maldives resort islands locked down
  • The coronavirus has reached into holiday resorts in the Maldives, with two staff infected.
The Maldives has curbed movement on several resort islands, after the country reported its first two cases of coronavirus.
The two infected people, who are both staff at the Kuredu Island Resort, tested positive late on Saturday. They are believed to have caught the disease from an Italian tourist who has returned to Italy and tested positive there.

Suspect it was already outside the region.
At best lockdowns are slowing the speed of spread, they certainly won't prevent it totally.
You don't need to suspect ... there are runaway numbers throughout EU, where the active case numbers are already way more than Korea,
France, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Scandinavia, Benelux - each have hundreds of cases. Bulk of this appears to have spread from Italy.

A small number escaping overnight won't make a huge difference.

Well maybe they shouldn’t have bother locking them down at all in that case. Giving effectively two hours notice for a whole bunch of people to escape you’re setting yourself up to be a bit of a laughing stock.

Meanwhile in the USA it's good to see that efforts to control the virus are in good hands...

Ah, we did need an injection of humour, even if it's Black humour. USA infections have been creeping up the list, I'm expecting in 2-3 weeks they will be firmly in second spot.

If that happens do you think Australia will ban arrivals from the US? I think that would be the equivalent of turning off life support for the tourism industry.

At some point, people will realise they cant rely on the government or others (including people tested and awaiting results or diagnosed with Covid-19) to do the right thing, and will take personal responsibility for protecting themselves from being exposed to the virus. I suspect many people have already made arrangements to do this.
