Could metal detectors become worthless in protecting the skys?

This seems necessary again....

And exactyly how many people could be shot (not even necessarily killed) by these little plastic guns??? A couple??? And then the person would be wrestled to the ground and severely dealt with i imagine... You could probably injure or nearly kill just as many people with a sharpened blade concealed in something or some sort of small explosive device that would cause explosive decompression... That's if in the US they weren't shot by some Sky Marshall first...

But after 9/11 the days of passengers all sitting calmly in their seats and trusting the sanity of hi-jackers are probably a thing of the past and if one or two passengers were taken down in the attempt to take out the nutbag, i think passengers would be up for that, they certainly won't be getting access to the coughpit...

Yeah. If the alternative is certain death, even the mildest-mannered grandpa is going to seriously consider storming the hijackers, using grandma as a shield.

They may be sold legally, but then can be resold illegally... That or just plain nicked... Most cars driven by teenagers in police chases weren't bought by the perpetrators either, surprisingly enough...
Resold illegally. Exactly.

As for teenagers in police chases in stolen cars. A minority of road crime, I suggest.

To the thread title. There have been ceramic and plastic guns for a long time. It's the bullets that'll get you every time. They seem to continue to make those from metal.

Way OT, however most high speed chases don't involve teenagers :)

On topic - I can't see 3D printers being much of an issue for aviation security. A combination of metal detectors and/or body scanners should be reasonably effective.

Of course not. Metal detectors are used to detect the hidden metal objects on the people, such us guns and controlled knives, etc. They are vital for airports security.

Thats true, and no one is disputing that, the question was around 3d printed plastic guns which have no metal in them.
